I have a 351 commander in my sn. I cannot get the idle below 800- 1100. Irradic idle. Carburetor drips after I shut it off out of throttle plate. I cleaned the needle valves but still irradic idle. Any suggestions. One guy said could be getting air through a intake leak.

One way to find intake leak is to spray carb cleaner around suspect areas. If you hit the leak the idle will smooth out temporarily.

If it's dripping fuel after shut off and you cleaned the needle/seat already, your float is set too high. Lower it until it stops dripping after shut off.
Either that, or you still have crud in the fuel bowl that cruds up the needle/seat right away.

When people run down to the lake to see what's making that noise, you've succeeded.

Sorry about the spelling. Just won't idle below 750 rpm. Should idle at 650 I believe.
Any suggestions?
Thank you

Bob, so you can screw the idle adjustment screw all the way out and it won't go down anymore?

You either have a vacuum leak or the timing is too advanced initial to let the engine idle down anymore.

Check the timing and check for leaks. Suspect areas are around the base of the carburetor/pcv valve/ worst case intake manifold gaskets. Check those areas and the timing and report back.

Well, First of all a thank you to those of you that chimed in with suggestions.

I had the carburetor rebuilt, that took care of the dripping problem but could not get an idle below 800 rpm. Checked for intake leaks could not find any. Checked points, They were set at .010. I reset to .015. Then checked the timing. Timing was 11 degrees ATDC. Should be 6 BTDC. Idle dropped to 450 rpm. Then reset to idle at 650 rpm and seems to be very smooth and starts easily.

Thanks again for all your input. Carb was a marine carb. Thanks for the photo's Art.
Bob

wow 11 ATDC! You should notice a good performance increase! I noticed a big one when my CC was running 1 ATDC vs the 10~12 BTDC. (PO really scratched up the timing wheel. its close enough)

glad you got it fixed, bummer summer is over...

This thread right here is a perfect example of how awesome is the CCF family. Now - we would LOVE a video post of that nice smooth idle for all to hear.
