I am having problems with my Borg Warner 71c transmission. It shifts into reverse, but makes a chattering noise once it is in. It does not shift into forward drive at all. I've checked all linkages and levers; everything is moving. Any advice as to diagnosing and fixing the problem?

Hi
Have you checked the oil level in gearbox.
Also check the linkage at the box, There is a spring loaded ball bearing that locates the lever into forward,Neutral and Reverse.
Also under the Reference section from on this site are the workshop manuels for the gearbox.

Clattering noise and now forward...I am guessing a broken internal part. I think someone else had a similiar experiece not to long ago and even posted a picture of the broken ring gear or some other part. Do a search (I am to lazy right now).

Sounds like it might be time for a rebuild.

reverse plates break alot , but you should still have fwd , take it apart and see , cheap and easy to rebuild , this kit is the best buy , has plates and seals for 75$.    http://www.amarket.com/imabw071.htm

Sounds like rebuild time. I did mine a while back & spent around $400. Links to some pics. http://photobucket.com/albums/d199/TexasBob/ - trans pics

I took mine to the local BW shop. $950 for a complete rebuild with a 1 year warranty. It looks like several people have done it themselves It turns out mine had a bent main shaft which was about 350. If you do rebuild it make sure everything is within spec or you will just be rebuilding trouble.

you can find brand new ones for 950 , just get the kit from amarket for 75$ and take your time , but put a new damper plate , they can let go at any time , your problem sounds like the rev plate is broke , very easy to fix.               http://bpi.ebasicpower.com/Merchant2/merchant.mv?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=eBasicPower&Product_Code=BOR1017-000-004T&Category_Code=ALL3D
