After reading about Vic's loss of his Dad, I thought I'd share this with the rest of you. My doctor in the past tried to get me to do one of those heart checks where they put something in you and then do a MRI. I always baulked because the 500 dollar test is not covered by insurance. Well partly due to the loss of my Dad this year and family history I gave in, could have used that money on a nice ARE shaft but what the heck . Anyway after having the test it was decided that that they needed to go in to check. I ended up getting a stint put in. On my follow up check up my heart doctor asks me how I felt which was fine to which he responds I bet you don't feel any different, which I admitted that I didn't. I had an 85% blockage in an arterie which is known to them as the widow maker. So if there are any of you out there that are on the fence your loved ones will thank you for it--------

Glad you caved in Gary and had it done. We wanna keep you round for as long as we can! This getting old thing sucks sometimes.

I lost my Dad to what started out as colon cancer that was not caught in time. Even though it's a pain in the a$$, I promote the old colonoscopy often to my friends who are at that age. I have had 4 myself, and my brother's get theirs regularly (here comes the jokes). There are things we must do when we get older, but just remember; there's an alternative to getting old.

Side note.
I read a saying that I thought was interesting.
How old would you think you are, if you didn't know how old your are?

My favorite part of the colonoscopy is when they say "you're going to start feeling sleepy"...

Gary, I've never heard of that test.

Colonoscopy +1

The only "test" that is both diagnostic and potentially curative - DO IT!

Bruce, the next time I see see my doctor I will ask what it's called. I did not pay that much attention,it was more like be there at this time and get this done! Colonoscopies are important too,due to family history I had them every three years but now I got a 4 year break. A neighbor set my mind at ease when he told me he'd rather have the stint operation than a colonoscopy, and now I'd have to agree.

Even for the younger crew, I had a buddy pass away (heart) more then 12 years ago now (early 30's), it was the impetus for me starting regular doctor visits. I knew blood pressure was a problem and have been on diuretics, statins and ace inhibitors since. its a pain, but as my doc put it back then, "we cure heart disease all the time now, through early identification and meds to control." Started the colonoscopy routine when I turned 40 due to family history. It is a royal pain in the ass because I am a pilot and there are so many hoops to jump through to maintain my flight medical, but I am confident I am postponing the necessity of the stents or bypass surgeries.

Had one last week. Clear Clean and not another for 10 years as per my GI Dr.
The prep work is worse then the procedure by far. Yucky tasting stuff!

I have a 57 year old friend in Orlando that did this same dye test and he had to have a Four Way ByPass or he would of had the widow maker. This widow maker was made famous by Tim Russart ( SP?) TV/ Anchor man. My bubby was also concerned about the cost but is now glad he did it.

I too am glad that you (Gary)will be around for some time. There is probably someone in your family in line for that blue mustang. Dang it.

All good reminders, I am due for a physical and probably should get together with Dr JellyFinger as well.

Stories make me think of Ripster, he was only 38

Life is scary. Everyone in my family older than my dad has been taken out or almost taken out by heart problems.

I hate going to the doctor but I know its necessary so if I don't feel well I go. At the point check ups become necessary I will go.

My roommates dad just passed away because he was stubborn and wouldn't listen to his kids about going to the doctor. Lung cancer was stage 4 by the time he actually went to see a doctor.

I have a long line of nurses in my family. I even married one. They have always said that the biggest killer of men is Pride. I have heard too many stories over the years about the preverbal father of 3 or 4 that HAD been walking around for 2-3 days with chest pains or had some blood where it shouldn’t be and thought it would go away. Odds are it won’t.

Another item that men never see coming is skin cancer. Since we favor passions that have us outside in the sun I would add a trip to the derm every now and again. Noses, feet and hands! They lose the sun block first!

My GI told me in rough numbers that he does an ave of 30 colonoscopies a week he feels they average a 5% malignant finding and on the whole are 85% treatable when caught early    thats some pretty good odds.
