I love my new tow vehicle. My Silverado was a fantastic truck with tons of options, but the Ram is great in the power department. Tows my baby much better:

06 4R V8. Bought brand new. It's been a great rig but to be honest I have been thinking about getting a "real" truck, maybe something with a diesel. When loaded with luggage and gear it gets tight with a family of 4. This has been an amazing vehicle, though, so we might just stick with it.

Thanks Dave! We love the SN.
The "tow truck" aint as classy as you old tow girl!... or for that matter my old 72, but a heck of a lot smoother riding!
We originally only had the 72 to pull the boat.
Pam didnt like riding 4 or 5 hours in the 72 with its 3/4 ton springs, so, thats when we bought the 96.
We bought the Silverado about 8 yers ago and only use it a few times a year. It had 70,000+ some odd miles on the clock at the time. I think it just turned 106,000 on the last "outing".
Pam actually likes the ride of the Silverado better than her Montana. I like the fact the 96 was ordered with factory tow package, 3:73 gears and a posi, pretty rare for a half ton. She gets around 15 mpg pulling the SN... not too bad for an old beater.

The new Ram with the diesel is extremely impressive as is the MPGs. The Ram is truly the best truck on the road today and the diesel only makes it better.
And the 2015 Colorado is said to have a diesel as well. Slightly smaller than the Ram's 3.0, but in a smaller package.

I've had my 2006 Durango Limited for about 60,000 miles with no major problems and have no intentions of selling other than the need for a truck bed sometime in the near future. It just rolled over 140,000 still looks pretty good and show no signs of slowing down.
Although the Durango is great for road trips, my old man's Camaro get a few more looks going down the road with or without the boat in tow.
Steve, did you forget about your "other" tow vehicle?

My 2000 4x4 Durango get's most of the towing duties these days cause it does a better job than the 86 with a 350 but I will use 'Melly' on occassions to pull 'Miss Scarlett' for old nostagia sake. Yes, that's a Bowtie pulling an Oval!

Front wheel drive to pull a boat? How does that work for you?
Had an Audi A6, but it was only allowed to pull 1400kg. So not enough. And it was hell at the ramp...
But all of that aside. Nice looking A4!

I put 6200 miles on my RAV4 pulling an 18' Century last year. Here it is pulling the 2-axle trailer that came with the '72 Skier purchased in 2013. I prefer single-axle trailers, so had one built late fall. The RAV4 performs well, great gas mileage, its AWD has kicked in only twice on many, many ramps.

Serious question, how do you get 4x4 without posi?
REgina is only rated for 7,000 and is now 1 wheel squeal. Wheel speed sensors failed long ago, which are necessary for the electronic traction control, which sucks anyway, and ABS.

I've messed with a lot of Chevy 4x4's. The vast majority of the "older" trucks were open with 3:08's.
In fact I added the posi to my 72 a few years ago when I installed a 700 od trans and 3:73 gears.
By 96 I would not call it a true posi. I think it is a governor lock . Still it was an option on any truck, 2 or 4wd.

Seems like a lot of the older chebbies didn't have a limited slip. Our shop truck had one but the rear was trashed and was replaced with a full unit with an open rear end. Marks new 2wd diesel had an open. It wouldn't pull boats out on a wet ramp so he dropped the cash to install a limited slip unit. I won't buy a truck without limited slip(not as big of a deal on a 4x4). One plow truck we had was an open and it did fine(1/2 ton). All of our 2500 plow rigs and diesel towers were all limited slip optioned.
The "limited slip" in my mom's SRT-8 300 sucks. Its actually just controlled by the anti-lock brakes. When one wheel spins it applies brake pressure and transfers torque via the spider gears in an open differential. Its pretty hard to drive it sideways with only one wheel smoking :(.
The new truck is a clutch pack style limited slip and it works great.

They have no problem calling it 4x4 even if you can only spin 2 tires at a time, like the man says it would be optional, and relatively rare for either a 4x4 or a 4x2 to have “positraction” (check for option code g80 to be listed in the glove box)– which in the chevy trucks in question was provided by an eaton limited locker, my understanding is they locked up at more than a 100 rpm difference in tire speed, unlocked at all speeds above 30. If you have a duramax truck you got one, if you bought an off road package (z71 pre 2008) you got one, if you ordered it special you got one. Some dealers added them with towing packages on their pre order trucks. I considered upgrading my 4x2 Sierra from an open to a g80 axle when I grenaded the old one, but even on 10 year old junkyard axles they were charging 7-800 more for the g80 version.

The truck MPG gap is closing, decreasing US demand for smaller trucks (although I do have a Ranger Edge V6 (195K miles) and it's always gotten horrible gas mileage). Fleet & commercial sales are also a huge portion of the truck market and for that bigger is better.
Narrower streets overseas increases need for smaller trucks there, and US gas prices are low and dropping.
Smaller trucks (and cars) have also grown, see old Tacoma vs new Tacoma for example. My 2013 Civic is as big as the 94 Accord I once had.
I would think, though, the sharp new overseas Ranger would be a big seller in the US. Also hope the new Colorado/Canyon mentioned above is improved, the first model had terrible ratings/reviews.

The fall of the small truck was caused ultimately by the lack of increasing fuel efficiency standards. Or alternately their prominence in the mid seventies through early nineties was the result of said regulations, combined with the second tier product management and marketing. The full size trucks are always going to have the advantage of high volume in the US due to the commercial users. That volume allows them to tool up to the point that the extra 8-900 lbs of material in the full size truck doesn’t make it cost any more to design and build per piece than the small truck. Absent the need to sell the smaller platforms to average out the number of larger trucks they were selling the auto companies would much rather sell you a larger truck with the higher profit margin. The larger trucks therefore get all the design effort.. the little truck platforms that were actually pretty nice in the mid eighties got nothing more exciting than new body panels or required safety/emissions updates. The big trucks got better and pretty soon you got just as good mileage with the big truck as the little truck, the prices were pretty close, parts for the big ones are cheaper, resale for the big ones better… The last Colorado is what happens when you take your B-team product development staff and tell them to produce a new platform quickly and cheaply. Reliability and efficiency take time and skill to produce and are hard to market, bigger and more horsepower are easier and quicker – Marketing groups think everyone is Tim the toolman Taylor.
Then when it doesn’t sell they learn the wrong lessons… oh no boss it’s not that we built a crappy truck it’s just that that segment of the market is dead, or the engineers made it cost too much- yeah that’s it.
Combine the above with all the new safety gear both regulated and driven by insurance institute testing and you have the reason why a new civic now looks like an early 90s accord.. and doesn’t get any better real world mileage than the 80s civic.
If we payed close to the actual fully burdened cost of gasoline over here like in Europe, or Japan our cars would likely look closer to the cars they have over there even if our streets are bigger.

Exactly Joe, Chrysler priced themselves out of the market on the Dakota. By the end of its run you could spend a few thousand bucks more on a similarly optioned 1500 that was 1)better looking 2)bigger and more comfortable 3)returned better fuel economy. A win win win with any consumer.
It is impressive how far full size half ton trucks have come over the last 5-6 years.

I've been buying new PUs since 1981 and at times the small trucks have appealed to me, mainly the Toyotas and Rangers. Each time I considered them, I was surprised that they cost just as much and the gas mileage wasn't any better, so why go small?

They cost as much to build as the full size ones and like you say Bruce other consumers think alike. More profit in full size too. Matter of fact when our company bought they paid extra to delete standard equipment !

I had a 1990 toyota truck, 4x2, 4 cyl, 4 speed, carb, vinyl bench, rubber floors… towed 3500 lbs (after I bought a back bumper for it anyway), did a decent job of it. Averaged 22 around town, got 30mpg with a fresh tune up on the way back from florida one spring break. Had it one month before someone ran into us and totaled while my buddy was driving the last leg of that trip from florida. Sweet little rig, 23 years later if I could buy something with similar size and performance I would.
I always laughed that the Dakota was the largest(at least in my area the cheapest) and yet lowest selling pickup of the s10,ranger,Toyota, Dakota crowd and yet on their redesign the other three all decided they needed to go bigger.

I always liked those little Toyotas. At the time, they were the most dependable trucks made. First vehicle I ever heard of where the brakes lasted 80k miles.
I had an '81 Ford F100 with a 300 ci six and 4 speed overdrive tranny. It got 22 around town and 25 on the highway. Great truck, except for burning out clutches at the boat ramp.

I had a little black 4x4 95ish Toyota 5 speed I liked to bop around in. It had huge tires so it was a complete dog (B2300 engine I think). With stock tires it would have been a nice little truck.
I love 97-03 Dakotas. They just all rust to the ground :(. My R/T would smash a 3.9 V6 in highway fuel economy. They were so under powered they gear hunted under normal highway operation.
If it was extremely cost effective I would still be a small truck buyer (new for that matter) but there is no point with the new half tons doing what they do. Oh and Dodge made the 05- Dakota look like complete garbage.

Lots of nice tow vehicles posted here. I feel compelled to add my 10 year old gray plastic 4-door sedan tow vehicle. 189,000 miles and less than $300 in repairs. 35mpg highway without a boat on the back, 18-20mpg towing a Mustang size boat. I couldn't find a photo of it towing either Mustang but here it is, the ultimate tow vehicle. Oddly, it seems the spam filters reject the words for the sport played on 18 holes and the vehicle in which one rides, so I will substitute the vehicle brand name Yamaha.
A previous boss thought the Dakota would work well for us Yamaha salesmen as it is the smallest truck in which one fits between the wheel wells. Circa 1985, with one Yamaha in the truck and another on the trailer, I threw a rod going up a long hill on 17 in the Catskill Mountains on a busy Holiday Friday afternoon, what a hassle and this was before cellphones. Shop guy brought me another truck on a flatbed and as we swapped it all out he asked if I'd checked the oil. I laughed and said...check it yourself, it's all over the ground.
They gave me another Dakota shortly thereafter. That one blew about a year later.
Just not up to the task in my mountain territory, but I actually liked them when empty, and the older squared look was good. the new Dakotas look like they fell out of the ugly tree and hit every branch on the way down..
