| I see that CC is offering a coastal edition wake boat that has a salt water resistant steering cable. Does anyone know if this is available for or convertible for a 93 ski? I guess I could just switch out the steering system. We're just about to finish an engine complete rebuild and the old cable is froze up of course. We're putting fresh water cooling on the boat and the steering cable is an issue! |

I could probably do some research. The cables in the new boats are much too long but I assume Teleflex makes something like it in a different size. You would have to convert the helm stub over to match the larger size rack they started using in 1998. ------------- |

Salt water resistant steering cable? Seriously? i suppose there also salt water resistant control cables too.. They all are. It's marketing folks. The word "resistant" gives it away. There is nothing Nautique, or ski boat or salt water speceific about a steering cable. The word "marine" alone implies corrosion resistant. I would be surprised if Teleflex made anything other than a "salt water cable" I have never seen one without a SS rod end. Grease it and use it. I run in salt with a regular cable with zero issue. Then again I greased it and I use it. I have never had to specify SW use when ordering a steering cable as far as I can remember. K I S S ------------- Jesus was a bare-footer............. |

| This will be my third cable on a boat ive had for 6 years. I've greased them and i've used them. I've had boats my entire life and never had this much steering issues. |

That is a lot of cables in a short period of time. Assuming you are buying quality, and I use that word lightly, as it seems nothing is of the same quality as it used to be, then it may be another problem. They should last longer than two years. My 82 has been replaced twice and my 95 once. Do you keep a lot of water in the bilge? If so, the cable may be underwater more than it can stand. |

Am I the only one who changed the seal on the rear support tube when I bought my new cable?? I don't know if they make teleflex xtreme steering cables or just the control cables, but they are really nice control cables. My opinion is that there is absolutely nothing that beats the Gemmer mechanical steering boxes of the 1950s. A pain to install, probably couldn't be installed in the modern boats due to all the obstructions in the bilge, but a bulletproof system. Nothing ever wore out. Next best is the Teleflex "Big T" system that we used until (about) 1990. I have seen examples of those cables lasting over 30 years in normal use and 2000+ hours in every-day ski school use. And if you wanted to, you could install a zerk fitting at the ram end and re-lube the full length of the cable, using STP instead of grease. ------------- "Art" |

I am taking the air ox out of my 83 sn. How do I remove the steering cable from the steering head. Just undo the nut? I want to pull the Cable out for better Access to the stringers. ------------- Bob Meimbresse |

| i believe i installed a teleflex "extreme" steering cable my last go around. i think the key is keeping the rubber seal in the aluminum tube. mine wanted to back off until i put a hose clamp on it. keep the shaft greased and water out of the bilge. should last a long time. |

Sorry, What I was referring to is the box under the dash where the air vent hoses go. There is a tube with the wiring harness and the steering cable in. I wanted to remove the cable and slide it out so when I replace the stringers I don't damage it. I wasn't sure if I just un-did the nut it would slide out and I could slide the cable back and remove it. Thank you, bob ------------- Bob Meimbresse |

Thats it Bob. Have a piece of 3/8 tubing a couple feet long handy to slide the drive end into. It can make a big mess quite quickly if it gets away from you. ------------- Jesus was a bare-footer............. |

how does one grease the cables? I know it's done on motorcycle cables and such, but I've never done a boat steering or throttle cable. My cable oiler tool is way too small for the size of the cables on our boat. ------------- '92 Correctcraft Ski Nautique |
