You guys have really helped me & Iv'e learned lots from this cite , thanks . What thermostat do you recomend from skidim for a 82 sn 2001 351 motor , 140 or 160 degree ? Im running at 190 after full throttle , then 160 after I slow down to 25 mph. I dont have a water strainer yet ( just bought boat 30 days ago).I will check tranny cooler next for debree. Things I've done - new impeller & cleaned out thermo , new exhaust hoses , new oil & filter, new tranny oil , new hose from w/pump to thermostat . I've checked all lines but the oil cooler and running at thr river without a strainer I bet its dirty in that area. I also tested the thermo & it opens , but it looks old . Please advise me what temp range to buy. Thanks

I vote for 160. 140 just seems too cold for any motor. 190 at full throttle is not too unusual and not an issue as far as the engine is concerned...but you could have some restriction somewhere as a 30 degree temperature swing is a bit on the high side.
You might consider reverse flushign the engine to see if you get scale or other debris out of the block (remove the water pump).

dans - I had some cooling issues on my 88 sn a couple years back. It slowly began to run hotter. When I would slow down after a slalom ride, the temp alarm would start chirping. Looked the system over and everything looked OK. I always change the raw water pump impeller ever other year. Tried new thermostat, tried taking the thermostat out and the motor ran way too cool. Finally I bough a new raw water pump and the problem was gone. There were small grooves worn in the sides of the pump causing it to loose efficiency. Don't know if this is your problem, just though I would add my experience.

Well ,I think I found it ! The first drive after purchase It ran hot & killed motor & went home. Then the old impeller was a just a nub after investigating .I thought I got all the old pieces after cleaning the hoses & thermo. Well after a ride at the river I guess It pushed about 10 huge blades back to the bottom of the water pump hose were impeller goes. Last week they must have been hidden in the middle after the oil cooler & before the raw water pump. I guess if you just bought a new boat you might want to remove all hoses completely and clear them out. Thanks for the tips . Dan
