I have an 87 nautique w/ a 454. The oil pressure gauge reads 80psi and the red light is on. The audible alarm is broken but I assume it would be sounding if it was working. There is only one wire coming off the sending unit. Does the light work off the gauge or is there supposed to be a seperate wire? I don't believe that the 80psi on the gauge is correct. Any ideas of what I should check? Thanks for any input?

I would get a dial pressure gauge & plumb it in, possibly in place of the sending unit. It is possible (albeit unlikely) that you do have 80 PSI.

+1 on what Chris says and what he means by that is a mechanical gauge. You can pick up a cheap one at an auto parts store. Let us know what reading you get. It's real possible it's just the sender that is bad. One other thing you could check while you are working on it,is to turn on the ignition and ground the wire that goes to the sender,it should peg the gauge.

Thanks for the replies. I grounded the wire today and it did peg the gauge past 80. So I am guessing the gauge is good. I will probably change the sender and see what happens and hook up a mechanical gauge to test and see what the pressure really is. Can any one explain how the idiot light works? My understanding is it lights up w/ less than 3psi but I don't understand where it gets its reading.

Here is a good thread on the alarm module.

It uses a op-amp for the brain & it has very poor voltage regulation, which is why it goes off erroneously. You can build one from scratch for about $100 but it won't work any better than the original (testimony). I just unhooked it & it now serves as ballast.
