The news has been all about the weather in Atlanta Hope you guys are well. The storm here in Eastern N.C. dropped 1-2in ice then 4-6in of snow overnight. Most of the locals are paralyzed but its just a flash back for a Michigan transplant. I can't imagine driving with people who don't drive in snow ever. Here it's bad enough people forget how to do it in less than a year!! Michael had a connecting flight to Orlando in Atlanta today that was canceled. Had a customer and his wife flying along to go test boats at Nautique and tour the factory. Rescheduled until further notice! ------------- |

Took me five and a half hours to make it home yesterday. Only had to go about 15 miles. Left my last customer about 1:30 pm. Everybody else in Atlanta did the same thing at the same time. It was gridlocked. Only got a couple of inches of snow which quickly turned to sheets of ice. People were abandoning their vehicles and many spent the night in them. My mother welcomed three people into her home for the evening. They knocked on her door asking to use the bathroom and were planning to go back out and spend the night in their cars. I understand it's bad and all but you have to keep it in perspective- Atlanta drivers have trouble driving when it's nice out too. Problem here is not the snow, but the ice. Everything froze very quickly. My wife left work at 2:30 and at 9:00 she had gone 6 miles! Complete grid lock from everybody leaving work early. She finally got to a point where she could get moving up another interstate and got about 2 exits up. Got off and nobody moving on the hills. Found a Shell station and called me since here cell phone was dead. I felt comfortable in my 4 wheel drive truck so I went about 20 miles to get her. 3 hours later we made it home. Pretty crazy at the Airport as well. Our glorius 'Skipper' called the lead mechanics to his office around noon and told them to tell us that if we wanted to leave early it was okay but that it were were going to be charged Vaction for leaving early. A lot of guys hung around till 1:00 or so then bailed. The TOC was pretty much a ghost town when I left at 1:45. From the news reports I saw the snow was gonna move in till mid afternoon so I drove the sports car into work instead of the 4 wheel drive Durango. Not the smartest move on my part.  Had planned on hitting I-75 for the slower ride home figuring it would take me 1+ to get home (normally about 35 mins) when I crossed over the bridge to access and saw a parking lot. Oh crap...NOT good. Decidewd to try the back roads which was probably the smarter decision as at least they were moving but accumulating slush pretty quick. Slowed down many times to allow myself running room to get up the hill as drivning a rear wheeled drive vehicle I knew I was screwed if I stopped. PO'd drivers behind me as they were on my bumper constantly but chalked that up to them being an idiot. Managed to finally get to 75 futher south and traffic was moving. I was going 35-40 while others were doing 50 and changing lines as if it were rain instead of snow/ice. Was waiting for some idiot to spin out in front of me cause he was drivng too freaking fast. Many drivers were only a car length behind me so I was waiting to slammed into. Only took me 2.5 hrs to get home but at least I got there. Watching the chaos on the news last night I decided I wasn't even gonna risk getting out there with all the bubba's. Saw a co-worker's FB post and he never made it home from work. After sitting in the gridlock for 7 hours he gave up pulled over and decided to sleep some and wait till traffic lightened up. No blankets, no nothing (a Michigan guy) just the big warm coat he had on. Hit 12'F last night. He finally said screw it and walked 2 miles to Home Depot where they had set up the store as a shelter for stranded folks in the aisles. That is where he still is last I read. Grocery stores are now shelters for the stranded, Gas Stations out of fuel from all the cars filling up, kids staying overnight in schools (one dad walked 5 miles in the mess to his daughters school so he could spend the night with her). Cars are abandoned everywhere. It's a freaking mess down here. It's like Greg said ...it ain't the snow, it's the 1/4" sheet of ice thats turned the road ways into ice rinks that's crippled the city. ------------- "Morfoot; He can ski. My ride was not as bad as it could have been, three hours to make an hour trip. The perimeter was a parking lot down by the airport. I had it explained to me today that this country has a cold weather disparity and that 10% of the countries population that live down south are getting 90 percent of the warm weather. What we are experiencing now is weather re-distribution. Its about time you guys shouldered your share of the burden. Of course it does not make us any warmer up here, but it sure seems more fair! it is probably far worse there than it ever gets in new england, in our town they pretreat before the snow/ice and have more sand/salt than they can ever seem to use. I noticed a plow truck in louisiana this morn trying to get thru the stopped cars it looked like the sander wasnt even on. ------------- former skylark owner now a formula but I cant let this place go |

I left Jefferson (up past Gainesville) at 1:30 and got home at 6PM. 85 miles in 4 1/2 hours. Quick thinking may have saved me. Almost to Spaghetti Junction decided nooo way I was getting on 285, got off at Jimmy Carter and took surface streets all the way home thru DeKalb & Clayton, wasn't too horrible till I got here to Fayette. ------------- 1974 Southwind 18 1975 Century Mark II |

we drive thru Atlanta couple times a year to get to Norris...only good thing about it is getting to see Moorfoot. Usually 6 lanes wide of crazy drivers. Waterdog...cool..3 years at the South Pole? I job hopped from transmission shop to transmission shop (3) then went to Huston Tx. for a few months. Then went back to Detroit. I found a job with The National Science Foundation at the worlds coldest airport working on C-130s and thought I needed a change of luck. Now I have an OAE (Old Antarctic Explorer Certificate) framed on the wall.
