Question, My Tique has rubber rub rails with the rope inside. The rub rails are in decent shape, but the rope is all black looking. Can you replace the rope without taking the rail itself off??? Or is it all one peice??

My understanding is you can replace it. It is the same vendor who makes the other rub rails. I know the name has been cited here before. I think it would have to be two pieces because the screws holding the railing on are behind the rope. BKH ------------- Livin' the Dream |

I read somewhere that you can make a tool out of electrical conduit that will help with the installation. It is supposed to help with spreading the rubber apart. You basically cut a 45 degree angle on one end of the conduit piece and then feed the rope thru while pulling the tool you made.

Mojo - I have changed the rope in my 88 a couple of times. I buy 5/8" 3 stand nylon rope from the flee market when they have it. To install, I just start at the stern and push it in in small sections with my thumb. Thumb gets tired, but it's not too bad. I just bought a 78 Cuddy Nautique with the same style rub rail. The rail on the cuddy looks alot tighter than my 88 so I am not sure if there are differences in the rub rails througout the years? One more though, don't take the rope out and clean it and expect to get it back in. It will be too short. learned this the hard way. I replaced my 84, see the threads in here. It was a real pain in the arse.... The rub rail was old, still good shape, but the rubber was hard.. so stuffing the rope back in was a pain. I used soap and made a tool to split the rail open and shove the rope in. But I had to do it twice!! I measured the rope with an extra 1-2 feet and I was still short. so get plenty of extra, a day to do it, and it will look nice when are done. Go ahead a fix any spots to the rail may be pulling out also.. easy to do, just back the screws out, fill in with some epoxy or like materials for rescrewing the hole...

When I did mine I took a heat gun and used it to warm the rubber, but use the lower heat setting, and keep it moving over a 6-8" area, do not over heat, then take a soft faced mallet, pull the rope tight, and lightly tap the rope into place, from start to finish it should only take an hour.

When I did my 79 Tique a decade ago I took the rope out, and then rolled it 180 degrees and put it back in. It looked like new, then I traded it for my 2001!
