My original seal is leaking quite a bit even after after a few tightenings, so before repacking I am considering the dripless seal. Is the dripless recommended? Any problems I might encounter upon installation? What about maintenance?

You have to take the drive shaft out to instal it.

I have also been considering a dripless system for my v-drive and look forward to more comments on the subject please.

We have an OJ dripless system in our BFN. I wouldnt have splurged if I hadnt found it cheap, and we hadnt had the shaft out anyways. Its really not necessary for a DD, and not worth going to the extra trouble to install, IMHO. The goretex packing material is virtually dripless and just a few dollars- thats the way I'd go. A v-drive could very well be a different story... might be worth the trouble to go full dripless if you need to pull major driveline parts out to service it.

I just put Gore-Tex packing in my '02 a few weeks prior to SJRR. My boat sat in the water for 48 hours, including 7-8 hours run time and I barely had any water in the bilge. Not even close to enough for the bilge pump to come on. If the packing nut is set correctly you shouldn't have to worry about it. Like Tim said, unless you have plans to pull the driveline anyway I can't see the value in going dripless.

Well, I'm sold on the Gore-Tex stuffing, but can't find where to buy it. Where'd you get yours?

I buy 20' rolls from McMaster. The Gore tex is a good decision. Getting the shaft R&R'd is quite a chore. I feel the dripless is a gimmick!
