Changed impeller and thermostat made temp go up a couple of degrees. Not sure but the new o-ring for impeller looked thinner. Might of used wrong paper gasket. No leaks. I guess it still could be sucking air. 86 sn 351 gt. Wanting to run a tick above 160 . 143 thermostat.

Not really just want a to run a tick above 160 before it was a little below.
The impeller and all that were had 1 season, but with new motor figured I better change it.
I think I am going to take it back apart out the other oring back in and check the gasket. They seem so generic. These Sherwood pumps are not that impressive.

At idle it wants to creep up to 165. I like it to go back to 155 or so.
something is a little off. Back to the drawing board

I really wouldn't worry about 5 degrees either way. The pumps are actually very simple and reliable, all the pump is doing is supplying a good volume of water, the stat is doing all the work on regulating temp. I have a feeling your pump is working fine. Easy way to check pump volume is to run the boat on the hose and watch the time to empty a 5 gallon pail.

New motor running warm because it's not broken in yet? Water temp of what your running in is getting warmer? Gauges aren't that accurate maybe you were running cooler before. I would not worry IMHO.

Mike, maybe you could describe what you're seeing in better detail we could comment on the cause... Idle vs speed, specific temps, etc?

I'll try. Boat idle on its own just a hair above 160. On take off itwill go down to 150 ish then climb to 163. Then when coming back to idle it will go to about 170 and eventually get back down to a little over 160. Before i did the impeller and thermostat it was running cooler. 143 thermostat and a sherwood impeller kit.
i think it is getting air either at the paper filter or the oring seemed smaller.

it's not getting hot. Just not a cool as before i messed with it.

My guess is it's the thermostat. If the risers are cool you have enough water. If you are really bored you can test the stat on the stove in a pot of water.
Or you could spend the same time with trying another stat of another brand. Your time and $. They just dont make stuff like they used to. New does not equal good.
It should stabilize around 160 and only move a touch either way even under heavy load.

Mike, I don't think I'd worry too much about it. As long as it's not running hot I think you'll be fine.

FYI, before my rebuild, I was running a 143 stat and it would stay right at that mark pretty much. Maybe hit 150 after a hard run.

After my rebuild, I too changed the stat, impeller, RWP seals, all hoses and circulation pump. Pretty much everything was brand new except the sender itself. I figured that was easy to change if I needed to after the fact. I also put new gauges in.
Since then, it runs right at 160 and maybe hits 170 on a hard run. So I could probably change out the sender to a brand new one but as long as it doesn't get any hotter than it has been, I'm good with it. Seems to be no different than pretty much everybody elses engines.

I took it back apart and changed out the o-ring and added some permatex to the paper gasket.
Pretty much same temps maybe a little more stable and seemed to stay cooler idling.
It does have a new sender. Conditions were real crap and tons of people out.    
Seems strong still have some tuning to do. A little rough spot at about 1400 rpm.
