Steve, If the only thing that has changed is the prop, then I'd have to say it's the issue. What prop was on it before? I can't find the thread I posted regarding my bad experience with an Acme 540 on my Tique. The vibration and noise it made caused me to put the OJ back on the boat! Oh for gods sake Pete, Im not sure if you were of your meds that day or only the days you bring it up again! Running a too-large prop on a hollow boat might have been your problem, or maybe your son bent your driveshaft and you only noticed it with a smooth prop (like Vic recently)? Either way, the strange harmonics or vibration you experienced is not indicative of a widespread Acme "issue" as you seem to be implying! It also has next to no bearing on how the wildly popular 2001 + 540 combo works. The 3-blade acmes can sometimes be described as making a "chugging" noise, but I've really only noticed it on the 1.23 boats- 1:1's seem silent to me. Either way, they're still buttery smooth. I'm not certain that I'd point the finger at the prop first, but since it's the one thing that's changed, it's at least worth ruling out if nothing else obvious is to blame. Throw another prop on and see what happens. |

Pete that's not a vibration noise that's the sound of performance.  I have both the 540 on my '85 and the 1442 on my '95 and love them, smooth as silk. Quinner even commented on the hole shot on my '95 when Kirk yanked him a$$ over curly locks last summer

I agree, Acmes Whirrr. I had just taken my meds that morning. Jess was in town (at Larrys on the Lake) in his '73 SN with his new 540. My '74 SN with the original style Federal was down the hill at my place, full with two chicks, 3 wakeboards, one son and someother dude. Long story short, I rode with Jess 10 miles to good water and I did notice a different whirrring sound. And yes, Jess' '73 SN then preceded to kick some '74 SN a$$, but I don't care cause I built his '73. |

I have 1/2" hull to prop clearance the acme is a little noisier but so is a cammed small block making mad horsepower! I think my hollow hull and tight hull to prop clearance is my issue. Ill deal this acme is awesome. Will be buying another for my recent engine swap. I will be dropping back down from 12 1/2" dia to 12" though. I am running 540. When I switched I got a whirr sound from the speedo's. There is some whirring sound when turning and slowing down, but the actual noise is coming from prop not tranny. My only complaint is the bow tends to ride a bit higher, which is great for setting the wake at moderate wakeboard speeds, but for ridding around in chop it gives you a good beating. No noise for me under operation but it does make the noise on deceleration. The deceleration noise is the same in modern 196 and 200s I have driven. Sounds kind of cool actually. If anything my OJ makes more noise at speed but is also smooth as butter. ------------- |

thanks for all of the replies. You can only hear the noise at idle when you put the boat in gear. Prior to making the prop change, I had and still have a "whirr" that persists at speed. This "whirr" at idle/just in gear is new.
