Last night I started the task of fixing a leak on my elbow from the engine on my exhaust, which is shot. When I removed the steel elbow and straight piece the connection to the plastic/ fibreglass baffle broke down. I noticed a repair had been carried out on the other exhaust at this point by fitting a rubber reducer from the fibreglass baffle to the steel pipe. I thought I would do the same. After a nights sleep I thouhgt I would ask what if I took these baffles out completely and replaced them with new s/s pipes right to the transom. Thoughts and implications please. Thanks Matt |

You can use almost anything you want,corrugated exhaust hose,stainless,copper,fiberglass exhaust tube,but other than more noise you will notice your wallet will be lighter no matter what you use. Thanks for the reply, Is there some where I can purchase replacement baffles. Otherwise I think I will copy the repair on the other exhaust. I will put some cauking around the fibreglass baffle then fit the rubber reducer to ensure a tight fit. |

| Steel elbow? Caulk? This does not sound like a factory configuration or a proper repair. Post some pics of what you're dealing with and we can tell you what we see. You might want to replace more you're planning... A leaky exhaust hose could send the boat to the bottom of the lake. |

Having trouble uploading pics File manager says they are too large and don't know how to reduce size on new phone. Anyways where the blue fibreglassed baffle is tapered down to fit a rubber hose to the straight then elbow to manifold is cracked and damaged; the baffle tube is located about 2' from exhaust manifold. I think the same happened before on the other side and it looks like they used a rubber reducer that was fitted over the blue fibreglassed baffle tube and connected to the steel tube then elbow up to manifold. I thought the same would work for the damaged side I forgot to mention the reason for pulling apart; there was a hole in elbow which had been fixed previously but leaked all last summer causing me to pump for around five minutes every morning on trips. If I was to remove everything and replace with a s/s pipe and elbow would my fuel bill go through the roof or just increase a little, looking from the outside flap down the tube all I can see is a cut off elbow in the baffle restricting flow a little. Yep it's a blue 3 3/4" od blue fibreglassed pipe which tapers down to 3" at the end which is a white plastic |

| i have a 79 mustang i'm messing with the exhaust on right now. mine doesn't have elbows, just uses flex exhaust hose to go from the manifold to the fiberglass tubes. are you saying you crushed the "flange" on the fiberglass tube/muffler? |

Yep when taking out the leaky elbow and pipe the flange crumbled away in the flexible hose joint Can I purchase new baffles? |

By "baffles" I'm assuming you mean muffler. Sounds normal for a '79. I can't think of a marinization package that utilized elbows, certainly not the more common pcm's. Sounds like those were added. Sealant doesn't belong anywhere near this repair. Get on a computer and reduce your pictures and post them- a description isn't going to be enough. |

Sounds like the PO Mickey moused in some schedule 40 instead of using the corrugated flex hose.

Matt, We sure need pictures as requested. I'm totally confused and can't really follow what the problem is. Many here use photobucket as a photo web site. It will automatically resize any picture loaded into it. Thnks for all the help in figuring out my problem. I will sort the pics out tomorrow. I have found replacement mufflers on skidim and then by the sounds of it I could revert back to corrugated exhaust pipe to fit to my manifolds. A cheaper fix would be to copy other side which will become clear once I post pics |

So I thought I would post an update on my exhaust rebuild and also ask a few more questions. I decided after the advice not to repair my damaged mufflers and I purchase new ultra marine 41" long 4" reducing down to 3" for connection mufflers and also 6' of 3" corrugated wet exhaust rubber hose. Today I going to connect it all up, my questions are as follows: My old mufflers had some astro turf zip tied around the mufflers: I assume this was to stop them rattling. Do I need to do this again with the new mufflers and could I use some 1/4" hard rubber mat which I have? I poured some water into the new mufflers today but very little came through the other end, is this correct? I'm worried there is too much back pressure? Thanks in advance. |

Yes, the carpet was on there it keep them from rattling and wearing through the thin wall of the mufflers. Didn't we suggest just replacing them with hose or tubing? Are the 4" muffles going to fit between the stringers? We asked for pictures! Pictures are impossible right now as my son dropped my phone in our creak. I went with the new mufflers as I was concerned with noise and fuel costs rising. The gap in the gunnels is about 4 3/4" so plenty of room. |

Using fuel use has nothing to do with mufflers, if anything having them will use more due to restriction. That said I'd bet you would not know the difference. You have a link to the mufflers you bought? Nope you're fine that would be the baffels in them that's how they work. Don't worry about what these guy's are saying its a slow month due to the extended cold weather and they don't have anything better to do.

Thanks gun-driver I thought mufflers improved fuel economy and straight through just made you look an idiot on the lake and emptied your wallet The weather will improve soon so people can get back to what they love

Idk about y'all but I drive on the right side of the boat, pee off the left, jump off the back, and the front is the front. If fuel consumption is a concern, biggest, easiest, and cheapest way to $ave is easy on the throttle to keep the secondaries from kicking in. |
