Is this a wiring issue or a gauge issue???

I have a '91 BFN, V-Drive, PCM 454 - 330hp, bought it in Sept. '12. When I bought the boat the Tach worked fine, no issues at all during test drive and through the month and a half of use. Last season we noticed that the Tach was working intermittently at best. It would work for a few minutes, then not at all for days, weeks, or months, occasionally working here and there. Gauge itself has minor rust on the face plate. Is this a wiring issue or a gauge issue? Still green as to what to check or look for. Read some forums, I now know it is the grey wire on the ignition/coil. Tomorrow I plan to check connections, clean and make sure good contact and inspect wire itself. Any and all suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance,
hdfooter - aka Shawn
