My battery is 4+ years old, and before I have a problem, I think I will change, any recommendations? Isn't 3-4 years the life expectancy?
Also, the current alternator belt is a Gates 7400 11A1015. The manual notes call for a Gates 7410 11A1040, any suggestions? Confirmations?
My Alternator is putting out 12.2 volts, which seems a tad low? May be attributed to the belt wear?
Thanks!

Can you tell if the belt is slipping?

At what Engine RPM are you getting the 12.2V? It may need to be a little above the normal 600-800RPM idle to get output.

Also, how are you checking the output? If you're going on the dash gauge, that might not be the most reliable. It would be better to check voltage at the battery with a multimeter.

Jerry,

Many here on this site have had batteries last many years (more than 4). Gary Star runs his batteries for decades.

I use the Optima Blue Top Gel type, but many have had luck with the lesser expensive Walmart batteries. Just be sure to use a starting battery when the time comes for replacement. Do not use a Deep Cell.

I hope this helps,

Donald

Hand held Volt meter @ 1500 rpm. I think the belt is slipping, needs tightening. I pulled both belts off when changing the impeller. I was changing the belts also, but did not due to the parts store out of stock. Getting shipment this week. Which brought up another issue, Gates belt 7400 on now, my notes in manual said a 7410, which is 1' bigger? Under battery box says a "Group 48", got that figured out, and leaning towards the same that's in there Auto Craft Gold. I think I did not get belt tight enough when reassembling. Will also do a load test. Thanks Guys

Your best bet on the belts is to get a pre-made PCM kit from Zach at N3, or Skidim etc.

On the battery, it's actually a group 65 that you want. Some of them are too tall. A 48 could work, but the 65 has been proven here to be right sized. It's a good idea to take your old one with you when you buy a new one. A.) to make sure it's the right size and B.) you can usually get "Core Return" $ for you old one.

The PCM correct belts are really nice and thick. They will provide a very long wear life. I run those on mine.

I checked your website this morning for verification Zach, did not see? What brand are they? Listed was Gates 7410. but the one on now is Gates 7400? I think I am getting "Slippage", and not getting a solid charge to the battery. Can you verify belt #? I have had no problems until I went to service and change impeller and belts.
OH, Good news, My New Carver Bimini arrived today!! Now I have to decide if I am capable of installation?! They have a video (Carver) on their website that makes it look easy? Whatcha Think?

Thanks Zach. I wish I had seen that before I bought the new Gates!! $19.70 for just the alternator belt. Will order from you next time. And the issue turned out to be 2 loose wires. Alternator and battery are fine. All is well now.
