Odd problem, seems my 1996 196 is getting really hot.
All is fine while running ( I have notice the temp is slightly higher this year ( and the lake is still pretty cold). But when I stop ( to change skier ) and restart the engine the temp gauge is well into the 220's.
Checked the impeller today all good, pipes are clear. Notice a small crack in the strainer cup. Could it be sucking air in and reducing the water flow ?
Any other ideas ? The motor and risers are pretty hot ?
Cheers for any info ,
FLY

Yes, Any point that will allow air into the suction side of the RWP will cause a problem. Run a bucket test and it will prove the issue.

You are so correct Wife and I dropped the boat in on Mother's Day for the start of the season, boy the water was chilly Anyhow when the wife picked me up at the marina I notice the temp gauge was pegged, we shut her off and started tracing it out. After awhile, we notice the strainer gasket was a cracked which caused the overheat. We really wanted to enjoy the rest of the day so with some plumbers and electrical tape, we were back in business Only problem we have now is locating the gasket, they stopped making those gaskets. Been talking with Zach and he might have a source to get them recreated. I would definitely take a look at your strainer, good luck.

I don't have the part # in front of me, but I found one for about $1 at Tractor Supply. I wrote it all on my strainer and put the receipt in the book. I'll edit this post tonight with some info. you can use. But if you are close to a TSC take the strainer bowl in and match one up. I think it was from a water softening machine... I'll be back.

84s use an older style strainer.

The one I used was a Culligan OR-233. from TSC $1.29 http://www.allfilters.com/waterfilterparts/orings/culligan-or-233" rel="nofollow - THIS SITE much more expensive than TSC. But you can find them measure and compare. Take the whole thing if you have to. It looks like this site also gives good specs for your measurements.
Good Luck.
Clark
EDIT: now I feel dumb.... I bet TSC does not have any stores in UK...Indiana does tho.
Good Luck anyway.

Thanks a lot, do appreciate it. I do have a TSC down the road from me and will diffently give it a try. Also thinking about heading to a "true" plumber supply store and see what I come up with. The manufacture of my strainer is Vetus and they do sell a very similar strainer, http://www.vetusmarine.com/store/p/229-Strainer-Type-150-1-1-8.aspx, for $38 bucks. The marina where I rent my slip from, MC dealer, has a few similar new complete strainers sitting on their shelves from a MC recall. Waiting for some pics and cost. Will figure something out, 80 degrees tomorrow

I assumed he was talking about an 84 since that's in his name.
I browse this site in mobile mode. No avatars or signatures. You should explicitly state what year and model you have when asking for advice.

Correct, it's for the 84SN 2001.

Seems like about 85 was a switch over from the Vetus strainer.
Zach has been working on sourcing replacement gaskets for this unit.
The newer boats have a Sherwood
Obviously they use different size gaskets. http://www.mcmaster.com/#standard-strainers/=s1r1ud" rel="nofollow - McMaster sells a similar product to the Sherwood . They also stock replacement gaskets for cheaper than anywhere else I've found. http://www.mcmaster.com/#standard-strainers/=s1qwqp" rel="nofollow - Less than $1 each but you have to by 10 .
The size for our 1" strainer is 80mm ID, with a 3mm square profile if you are sourcing elswhere. This is the PCM gasket, which is a total rip off through the dealers, not their fault, they can't seem to get it cheap either. I have a McMaster strainer sitting on my bench but I haven't pulled the gasket out yet to compare to the PCM or my 88 original unit. My friend's 88 is so snug it's nearly impossible to get it to seal up. I'll be comparing all 3 units very soon.
I pulled a much thicker one out of a BFN strainer but it was still the same OD (83mm). It was 74mm ID and about 6.5mm thick. I can't say if this is "original" or whatever but has been working just fine for years. It was also much softer/stickier.

the culligan or-233 is stated to be 3" and it has a round cross section. 80 mm = 3-9/64"-ish. RCH over 1/8". I have used it for 3 years, got my moneys worth for $1.29, although sales tax is a bitch here in TN so make it $1.41. At that rate, 10 would last 30 years. Man I hope I can still get in my boat in 30 years. Or nice gift to include in your Xmas cards to 9 CCF friends.

Been working with Zach and no luck so far on a reproduction... The strainer above is what the MC dealer had but it's larger then my original and a tight fit plus I would have to modify the bracket. Well it looks like I will be ordering newer Vetus #150 since it's very close to the original.
Thanks for the comments

I would probably give up on that and swap it out for the newer style.

I refuse to buy a $60 new part if the part I need is only a buck
I have an update; I was able to find a local vender that specializes in O-rings. They were able to match up an exact size O-ring for the older type strainers. I am going to the lake this weekend and will give it a try. It’s a great fit and only a $1 This is a stock item for this vendor and if anyone needs one, give them a call and they will ship it out. Have a good one and thanks for the advice.

You can get a new style strainer for under $30. Even after some fittings and hose you're still under that $60. I'm more and more inclined to take mine out anyway. The through hull and trans cooler do a decent job on their own. Depends on your water I suppose...

My 78 Nautique O ring failed on the strainer, I was at the lake, weekend trip, no parts handy so we took a tube of silicone, squeezed in enough to more than fill the o ring channel, then wiped a light grease on the cover, just a thin film so the silicone would not stick, installed the cover with the silicone still wet. Wiped it clean and let it sit overnight, and it worked till I sold that boat years later. The cover was still removable since the grease film kept the cover from bonding to the silicone. The 78 strainer with the removeable top was much easier to clean and gave a great view of the filter, my 95 Ski Nautique uses the later filter and is not nearly as easy to use with the bottom mount strainer.

I have an 84 with the same strainer and the same problem. I can't read the info off your photo though, the resolution isn't high enough (or I'm too old). Any chance you could type out the information for me to get a new one?
