So there's this girl...

Don't all the best stories start that way?

On Saturday's I like to play football in this co-ed beer league and then patronize a local watering hole afterwards. Well for several months the bartender there has been training for a marathon and looking more and more fit each week. That's the kind of thing a guy like me notices. So we got to talking, maybe 10 weeks ago and she says, hey, I'm looking for someone to train with, run this race with me. Well old beer muscles woke up and said, I can totally do that. 26 miles? No problem.

Running is like dancing to me...I don't enjoy it because I'm not good at it. So I put off training. The race was Sunday. I ran one time leading up to it, 10 miles about 5 weeks ago and I threw up after 8. She thought that was hilarious.

Fortunately, she sustained a stress fracture in one of her feet a few weeks ago, so she only wanted to run the half...otherwise I probably would have died.

About 10 miles in, my right leg straight up gave out. Couldn't stand on it. But I powered through. Finished in 2:34:53. Not a world record by any means, but after not training, I'm not upset at all.

Today I still feel like death. I'm moving like a baby giraffe learning to walk. Its not pretty. The moral of the story is I should not be allowed to make any decisions while drinking, especially if a pretty girl is involved.

Before - don't I look happy to be awake at 6am?

After

Action Shots - they took my picture at various points along the course, but won't let me download them unless I pay some exorbitant amount of money, something like $65...not interested. So these are a little small. You can tell I'm in obvious pain at the finish line.

My legs give out when I sit on the toilet too long. Up and run a marathon or half?? No way, doesn't matter how pretty she is. You really lucked out on her injury.

Those retro Lite cans sure are cool.

Adam,
I ran a half about 6 weeks ago and it worked me over real good. The last mile was uphill. Not fun.

I did feel accomplished at the end tho and you should too. Congrats on finishing a run like that.....and with no preparation? Dayum!

The cigarette photo is great.

Ok, found a way to blow them up, and they very conveniently put a giant watermark on it for me, that was nice of them.

Adam, That made my day. Nope, the week!! And the cigarette picture is the best!! I will bet that makes for next years flyer for this event.
I, too was talked into "running" by a pretty lady (Dr Deb) I hate it. 5k's! I imagine it is a lot like giving birth. Sounds like a great idea until the PAIN comes, then all smiles when over? 13 miles!? You must be in love. I cant wait to show Deb, thanks for sharing.

Running sucks. Buy a bike. You get to where you need to go much quicker.

This weekend as far as I know, she wants to learn to wakeboard, and I'm always looking for new decorations for the boat.

You are the man, even though you look like you're in pain. Ironically, running is my medicine. I love it. I am definitely a happier person when I run. I'm sure folks were pissed when you lit that cigarette. I would have been laughing my butt off. It's take people as bold as you to make this world interesting. Nice job brother!! I'm glad it wasn't a marathon, because you may have ended up with some lasting injury (still might).

Adam good thing I wasn't drinking anything, everyone would be wearing it. That cig picture reminds me of John Belushi doing the training for the Olympics, cigerettes and little donuts

Great story. Too funny and too painful on so many levels. 13 miles no training, you are one tough/crazy mutha. I feel mostly the same way about running, but do it anyway; biking is my medicine (good for what ails you, that is until you get hit by a car).

Half marathon with no training.....crazy!! Having been a runner in the past for 20+ years I can't imagine rolling out of bed and doing 13.1 miles; girl or no girl!! The "Bear" and I ran 100's of 10k's, a few 9 milers, and a couple halves back in the day so we know what it takes. Obviously you are a bit more of an "athlete" than we may have been giving you credit for, which makes me think you were "bagging it" when it took you so long to learn to barefoot.

John I never thought I would say this to you, but if you look closely at my shorts in this picture you'll see a slight bulge...

Nope, I just do everything the hard way...run with no training, check. Drag on my ass forever before putting my feet in, check. If there's a wrong way to do something, I'm gonna figure it out.

Nope never in a million years would I think that you would say this to me...
Was so scared to look that I had to delete the picture from this reply...
I must admit...I did check out how well the young lady filled out her blue t-shirt...

But like Bill said..we ran in many a race back in the day..probably why our knees are so bad now..but we would never dream of running without training.
