Changing my transmission fluid for the first time. Successful steps: Sucked fluid out the dipstick hole Did not get the tubing stuck
Questions: I did not vacuum out close to what seems to be the standard 2 quarts. I kept repositioning the tubing and getting more fluid and finally couldn't get anymore. I can't say for sure the level prior to starting extraction. From reading it seems I should put back what I got out. But what if was low? Can I top it off?

Put in what you think you got out and check the dipstick. Fill carefully until your transmission is full. Don't worry about the little bit of fluid you didn't get.

I had the similar issue as I was only able to get little over 1 1/4 quarts out of mine. You should be good.

Thanks. I'll put about 1 1/4 qt back in like I got out. What I got out is a deep purple (grape juice color) and what I have to put in is bright red (cranberry juice color) . Previous owner has a handwritten note in the operation manual that says dextron ATF (30w) and I bought dex/merc ATF Do I get the right stuff?

The 30w oil note was below dexron atf so i am assuming it was actually referring to the engine oil. Is that a correct assumption? I love exposing how much of a novice i am!

I got 2 quarts out of mine when I changed it last. Maybe yours was low to begin with??

If that is your way of asking if any old 30w oil is proper to use in the engine, then the answer is definitely NO. Valvoline Racing VR1 20w50 or Mobil1 15w50 (those specific brands, products and weights ONLY) are what would be recommended. Do a search on here if you want more background information as to why.
Conventional Dex/Merc ATF is fine, as is Dex III. Do NOT use synthetic or high mileage formulations. Err on the side of overfilled if anything- no harm will come of it (unlike if you run low).

No, i think I combined two separate pieces of information (engine oil and transmission fluid).
I put 2 full quarts in and it is filled to the top, so i assume i was low before.
I put the Dex/Merc ATF in because I believed i pulled out a dextron atf.
Boat fired up no problem. held temp between 140 and 160 on my fake a lake. after an intial puff of exhaust smoke, she seemed to be her old self and begging for the lake. Hope to have it floating within the hour.

Not sure what you are pulling out of your tranny there, but the red regular Dex/Merc (not synthetic) is what should be going in. Glad to hear she is running and ready to go!
After a day on the lake look at your fluid again. If necessary you can always empty and refill with fresh stuff again to get rid of the majority of the old fluid.

When you are on the water, take a quick ride. Once boat is up to temp, shut her down and check the fluids. And the transmission oil should be red.
When I change mine I get around 1.75 quarts or so out.
Guy recommend valvoline vr1 oil because it contains zinc/phosphorus for flat tappet engines. You could buy a ZDDP additive as well to add to your straight 30w. As for the brand oil and filter and viscosity, you are on your own there;)
