i use 400lb sac on either side of the motor and 150lbs of lead in various locations to balance the boat depending on who is riding along.

As far as I can tell, I'm not quite sure...

My ski bud down the street REALLY loads his 88 down. About 150lbs in the bow, 75lbs on each side of the tank, 600lb fat sac in front of the rear seat, another 500lb fat sac half full in the rear seat and two 60lb cubes in the observer seat. Needless to say the wake is monsterous and the platform is easily 3-4 inches underwater when stationary when normally its 2 inches above the waterline before he starts filling sacs. I can verify the weight in a couple days as I'm supposed to go with him. Might even be able to take a snapshot or two.

What caliber of rider are you? Pretty sure Nick is doing inverts and spins. You may not need a bunch of weight if you are just getting into jumping etc. Most of the people I know who own 2001s use 250# side sacs ( or around that size) beside the engine box and people in the rear seat.

Right now I have a 1979 Ski Supreme .I don't own a 2001 YET , but keep looking until I find the right one . I mostly just jump but like to get as much air as possible . Would like more - hence the hunt for a 2001 .

I was about to put in that link. It's a video of my wife behind our 89. Here's a link of me wakeboarding behind our boat. Ballast is described in comments. http://youtu.be/xB5Msh4YDEA" rel="nofollow - wakeboard vid

We ride with about 1500 lbs total ballast but like stated earlier if you're not doing inverts and spins that much is not necessary. I take a lot of sets with only 500lbs of ballast or none at all too. We can't surf with less weight though.

Curious I have a 2001 for sale and upgrading to a 97 sport what is the least amount of weight to surf ? Do I need more with one boat than the other ?

There are multiple factors that determine minimum weight to surf from the rider size to board size to goal of surfing (going ropeless). My wife could probably surf our 2001 ropeless with our 5'6" board with 800lbs ballast in boat but she wouldn't be happy with the wave and she'd have to work hard to stay up (not as much push). I don't know about the Sport's surf wave but I would think it takes more weight since it is a larger boat, again multiple factors come in to play between the two boats.
