Are you running a deep cycle battery by any chance?

I saw your other thread, looks like you have a starting battery. Do you have any pics of how you have the solenoid wired?

Could it be the ignition switch?

I ordered a marine solenoid and starter switch,it will be here Monday.I removed the starter and cleaned some rust off of the magnetic plates and the armiture. The brushes looked fine.after putting it back together, when I apply power to the positive terminal and ground the case to the ground on the battery all I get is sparks, and the starter does not turn.

Did you check the commutator for shorts winding to winding. If you take it to "auto electric" shop, they will turn it down and undercut the mica.
