I tightened the alternator belt which appeared to be a little loose. After tightening the belt, to about 1/2" of movement when pressed with my thumb. When I took the boat out it was ticking like a clock at idle and the sound increased proportionately with the RPMs. I took the belt off and the alternator pulley had a little bit of play. The other pulleys moved smoothly with no free play. I put the belt on a littler more loose when I re-installed it. The tick sound is now barely audible.

So I am thinking it is the alternator bearings, so should I get the alternator rebuilt or buy another one?

Thanks
Tom

Get it rebuilt, probably just needs a bearing. You might even be able to do it yourself.   Search the 'net, plenty of youtubes showing how to.

Install new bearings on the alternator if you have the capacity. Lots cheaper than having it done!! The bearings should cost around $5 each and you want to replace the complete alternator??
