I have a 1990 Ski Nautique after noticing some very loose steering and a lot of water in the bilge I found the fiberglass and the gel coat cracked at the rudder port. After looking at it on the inside someone has patched it before. I was thinking to sand or grind the old patch off and doing a better job. Want to build it up at least a 1/4" on the inside . Not sure what to do on the gel coat side. maybe epoxy? Any thoughts, or has anyone made a repair here?

Is it cracked from having an impact to rudder?...it does look cracked through..you should get some good advice here ....mine is that I would do a real good job fixing it. ------------- This is the life |

| No impact to the rudder as long as I have owned it , talked to the previous owner and he knew nothing about it. Thanks for the advice. |

Guessing the PO has selective memory, most likely impact damage and a hack repair. Can you get some better pics showing a bit more on the Gel side also. Not 100% sure but believe that hull there was/is some wood backing there, if it has been compromised and leaking for a while that wood may be very saturated and in need of replacement. As far as the gel side it's up to you how perfect or imperfect you want it to look, tough to tell from those pics if there is any damage or not. If you are planning to DIY you will definitely want to do some research on the correct resin and glass to use, search user "TRBenj" IIRC he documented a full stringer job on his 90' Ski Nautique |

No wood backer there, and I never did a full stringer job or messed with the rudder port on my 90. Pics here of the port (though not my boat). (Your memory is going CQ!!) http://www.correctcraftfan.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=6888 Agree that it probably took a hit if the cracks extend through the gel and into the glass. I'd grind down the bilge finish and add some glass (epoxy resin) in that area. Outside cracks or missing gel/glass can be ground out and filled with thickened resin. Add gel over the top (first use a conversion coat) if you're concerned with the cosmetics- but not a concern for structural reasons. Then re-bed the port and fasteners with 5200. |
