Hi, my wife and I are interested in looking into a retirement home on Smith Mountain Lake or Kerr Lake. Can anyone give me the name of a good real estate agent in either of those areas? Also any info about these lakes would also be appreciated. This is just a fishing expedition at this time, not sure we can afford a property on either of these lakes. Both very nice lakes - but - the water levels make big swings. Kerr is down so much in the winter most boat ramps are WAY out of the water. Smith Mt is home for Steve Karas he knows Roanoak Va. The next lake down river is Lake Gaston and the water level is constant with little veriation. I've been on all three. I agree. I have been toying with buying lake property. Initially I looked at Kerr as you get a lot for your money. However it is the lake which is used to keep Gaston at a relatively constant depth. If I buy it will be on Gaston. I have been dealing with Story Properties in Littleton and they have been good to work with. I have heard nice things about Smith Mountain Lake, I just have never been there. |

Art, As Andy mentioned, we are on Lake Gaston. I grew up going to Kerr Lake and Gaston. I remember years when Kerr could not be accessed because of the water level. Gaston only fluctuates by 2 feet unless an emergency is declared. Gaston is more expensive, but the constant water level is well worth it. Both lakes are in what I would consider a rural setting, so it really depends on what lifestyle you are looking to retire to. I do not know much about SML, but I am sure Steve will chime in soon. I would not limit yourself to those few lakes though, because there are some great lakes around NC, SC and VA that would grab my interest. For example Lake Wateree in SC is a place where some great bargains can still be had. It's a small lake. It's rural, but still close enough to get some culture if you are interested in such things. If you and your wife get serious and want to make a trip, I'd be glad to send you a key to our home on Gaston and you all could stay there to explore the Kerr/Gaston area (there may even be a boat or two there for you to use). We vacation at Smith Mountain each year. My dream is to retire there (or better yet move there sooner!). We LOVE it. It is big, very clean, generally very quiet, in a beautiful setting, and its always easy to find good ski water. I grew up on Lake Norman and SML reminds me of Norman from when I was a kid, when it was a quiet out of the way place. I have not experienced the big water fluctuations mentioned, though the water level may rise and fall by a foot a day depending on energy production at the dam. It may be different in the winter. Most docks include fixed piers with boat lifts and an axillary floating dock which leads me to think the levels don't fluctuate that much in general. I have rented from several agencies over the years and have been very happy with two in particular.
