We sure have been getting hit with plenty of spam lately but this morning it's unusually heavy. Kieth has been deleting it. I usually report the spam posts every morning but there were too many today. I wonder if site settings have been changed? The last time I checked the 2001 site, it was gone. I guess he just gave up dealing with the spam!

The spam started back real heavy right after Kim Kardashians ass broke the internet, it might be related.

And again this morning. I certainly am not an expert but I do know other sites require new member approvals from it's administrator(s). Would it eliminate the spam? However, it sure would put more burden on Keith!

Keith has always avoided administration approval for new members. He is looking into the source of this recent spam wave.

I've been hitting mark all posts read, at least it gets them off the screen so you can see when any real ones come up.

Peter,
I'm with you about liking the Spam in the can. I slice it and fry it. I enjoy it even more than bacon or sausage but, my absolute favorite side for breakfast is corned beef hash.

And, it looks like member attendance/posting is down.
Has anyone clicked on one of the spammers links or tried to send a PM? I've been tempted but figure it won't do any good.

Pete, I have PM'd a few spammers in the past. I can attest to a personal therapeutic effect, but other than that it is not effective. It seems their nature and anonymity leave them with no shame.

If the sites hosted in IIS. I'd be happy to a look at the logs. Shouldn't be terribly hard to find the offending IP address and block them. Hopefully its not multiples. Apache and other odd ball Linux servers surely have some logging. Maybe change the site to log the posting ipaddess if its not already storing that in the database

Guys, FYI the spammer is not a "person", though that is really funny. Typically it's just automated scripts crawling the web, creating logins, and creating spam posts wherever they can. On other forums I participate in, the new user is required to post at least once in a certain thread so they can be proven to be a real human being.

Joel,
Even with my limited computer knowledge, I understand but what do you call an "automated scrip" besides "he" or "she" ?

I would think the following is still viable:

The last time I counted, the "automated scrip" has recently spammed the site 24 times since this morning!
EDIT: it's now 25 times!

Nothing was overlooked. Usually spammers don't come back. So, quite often their posts are deleted and in Keith's free time he will delete the accounts too. That recent onslaught of new spammers was different. I don't know if he has opened registration back up but I do know he's working on something big for CCF right now so please be a good boy and stay patient.
