In preparation to sell my Northfield home, I been doing some work before a home inspector takes a look. One of them is bringing the ground fault interrupters up to current code. So far I'm at 6 receptacles and one breaker in the panel. Through the years I've done additions and always avoided the GFCI's since they can be such a PITA. Yes, I know the NEC is written to prevent injury but think about all the early years when we didn't even have equipment grounds!! I've been in the kitchen all day working on 2 20 amp circuits. I have learned the GFCI's do not like older under cabinet light fixtures. and would trip with the fixtures on the load side. So, the fixtures had to be wired line side before the GFCI's. Thankfully I'm in an area that requires thin wall conduit so pulling extra wire is pretty easy.  if the GFIC is reading and needing 7ma or less balance (older one's required 5ma, that was a nuisance) how would it work without the neutral on line side if the hot went to line side?Always always always always always always always always use GFIC's when required. Nuisance tripping is a potential hazard, with the exception of running fixed lighting on line side. Fluorescents sometimes don't like gfic's. |

Come on Pete, I learned that lesson back in the late 80's on my first house remodel, lol. Also if run accordingly, any rcpt down line from that GFCI will also be protected. Sounds like you are under contract, congrats!! |

I interpreted as you were trying to get by without running the neutrals back to line side, as in just the part I quoted. My English and Internet/skills aren't the best. I can't believe the guy giving me heat about the importance and safety of a trailer winch scoots by without gfic's.

| If you have something on that same circuit (I.e Petes lights) that won't run on a GFCi it'll trip the entire circuit over and over. Plus Gfi breaker is about $35 vs $12 receptacle. Or in the kitchen, gfi on fridge could be a smelly disaster when you come back from vacation. |

No Pete lives too far away for his lights to be on my circuit  but I understand what your saying. I had my house remodeled in the early 90's and there are GFCI's in every bath but none in the kitchen,I guess it was not code back then. I just went to look and see my outlets there are on separate circuits,so for me the breaker panel ones would be easy. I guess my electricians were good. Todd, The house was completely gutted in the early 80's and got complete new electric. At that time GFCI's went in the baths and the garage. I remember the first thing I plugged into the garage was my Porter Cable belt sander. The GFCI didn't like it so it was swapped out. That outlet is now behind a freezer so it's exempt. All the outlets I added in the garage are now protected. The basement outlets (with the exception of the alarm which is exempt) are now protected. If all else fails, read the directions!! Yup, it's something some of us men don't always do. I finally got around to checking the GFCI breaker I installed for my yard light and exterior receptacle. Well, it wouldn't set and was tripping. Thinking I had a bad one, I took it back and got another. Same thing! So, I started removing devices from the circuit. After the yard light itself, the dimmer on the light, the timer and even the receptacle, same thing. | It never could Pete. That jumper can't reference anything alone. Takes two to tango. The old ones never worked that way. Sure they pumped out juice but if you faulted ground it'll juice keep pumping, not tripping at the old requirement of 5 mili-amp. |

 Without that neutral wire of the load going back to the protective device I don't see how it could sense the leakage in current thus it wouldn't know how/when to trip.

My only electrical chore to finish is cleaning up my breaker panel. I added lighting contactors so ether 2 master switches or my alarm will light up a light in each room as well as all my outside spot lights. In doing so, I added an extra wires on breakers. Since my breakers are not rated for two wires under each terminal I need to add pigtails to the two wires at each breaker. I was pretty young when I bought my first house which wasn't in the finest of areas, big yard backing up to a city park. I Installed motion sensors in the back yard, tied to a relay connected to the door bell. Anything in the backyard would trigger the sensors, ring the door bell and then the dog would bark like hell. |
