I paid some crook a lot of money to rebuild my 71c velvet drives last fall. The port side will only go in reverse and neutral, not forward. Now I find he has sold the busiess and the new owner and an attorney say the new owner is not responsible. I disconnected and moved the shift lever manually with the same results. Is there anything else I can to before paying through the nose to have it pulled by what I would hope is a more reputable service?

Jim,
Welcome to CCfan. What boat do you have? Since CC twins are rare, I'm assuming it's another brand!

We have heard the story before about so called pros rebuilding Velvet's without the expected results. Unfortunately you have done everything you can without opening it up again. Since it does go in reverse, I'd have to say the pump rotation is matched to the engine. Many here have sent their tran's to Fantastic Finish Marine in Ohio. I'll see if I can get you a link.

Yes, thank you. I have an 81 HarborMaster houseboat with twin 270 Crusader engines. I am reluctant to have them pulled by one person and having themm shipped to another and than having it reinstalled. I was concerned that if there were issues whoever reinstalled it would blame the rebuilder. What are your thoughts?

Removing the tranny is a fairly easy task. Why not do it yourself?

Is the boat out of the water?

Jim,
If the boat is in the water, the trans can be pulled. With the prop shaft disconnected a couple bottle jacks under the exhaust manifolds the forward engine mounts loosed and the aft mounts unbolted, the engine will tilt forward.

The original owner is a member here. Several years back he was a great contributor to the site. He went in a different direction in life but left his best employee with the business.

Thank you for trying to help me. If there is anything else you can think of please let me know. At my age and with my health condition there is no way I could even attempt to remove them myself..
