I have an 82 SN 2001 that Iv'e been putting back together for a couple years but has some floor rot and I've been putting off that repair. I just bought a clean 81 S/N (solid floor, totally complete, all working) that's very solid with a seized motor reportedly due to an overheat and blown head gasket due to a bad water pump. I'm thinking of just pulling the good motor form my 82 and putting it in the solid 81 and selling the 82 as a restoration project, or starting a slow restoration on my own. my questions are: 1. what's the difference between the pre-2001 hull and the 2001? 2. should I also put my known to be good tranny in the 81? will it fit? 3. what else do i need to know about the motor swap? 4. any other tips? | Powertrains are the same. Hulls are quite different. The 81 will get the job done but the 2001 is a much more modern ski marine, and a lot roomier. |

interesting, my wife asked if it was smaller than the other one and I really couldn't tell. i know the interiors got a lot nicer in 1985 but I hadn't really noticed much difference between this and the 82? |

2001 is a foot longer and 8" wider than the 2nd gen... It was a pretty revolutionary hull at the time. The seat style is unchanged between 81/82 unless you got the optional delux on the latter. The difference in roominess is pretty significant though. |

So I got my good motor and transmission in no problem and it's running good. the transmission would only engage in reverse so i adjusted the cable stop and now the shifter works properly. unfortunately i have a howling squeal in either direction, worse in forward and there's a heavy shudder too. I was wondering about the flax seals (who knows how old) but what else should i be looking at. not sure how to attach video, picture of strut and shaft underneath attached. any guidance would be appreciated. thanks.  |

| You need to get the strut bushing wet, and keep it as wet as possible when running it on the trailer. Better to not put it in gear when you're on the trailer. Although, sometimes the prop will turn a little in neutral anyway. The strut bushing relies on water for lubrication. |

Did you check alignment when you installed the new moyor/tranny? If not I'd suggest you unbolt the shaft coupler and run it in forward and reverse and see if the transmission runs quiet with nothing attached. ------------- '63 American Skier - '98 Sport Nautique |

Thanks guys. alignment is good and trans was fine when not connected to prop. i normally wouldn't engage but I was checking to make sure it went into forward and reverse with new cable. I'll try ti briefly tomorrow with strut bearing wet. |

Ok, that explains the noise. When we say wet, have a hose running on the cutlass bearing the whole time, you really don't want to damage it and it's made to be submerged. ------------- '63 American Skier - '98 Sport Nautique |
