http://www.correctcraftfan.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=34338&title=protec-ignition-swap" rel="nofollow - I'm using John's steps as my reference.

I start my swap out today. First thing first, dizzy is stuck, can't get it to budge. I squirt it with some liquid wrench as it's about all I have at the moment. So I leave dizzy and trigger plug alone for the moment.

I go to the EMS Plug and I connect P and D together.
I connect E and C together.
I connect G and B together.

I remove coil pack and plug wires.

On my trigger plug there's 4 wires, I think John mentions he had 3. Doesn't matter at the moment, I haven't done anything to plug yet.

I now go back to work the dizzy out. No luck. Yes I pulled the clamp and bolt out. I tapped it. Tried twisting with a wrench but not too easy to get bc alternator, tstat housing etc is in the way. In an attempt to bump the engine over with hope maybe it'll loosen the dizzy up I discover the engine won't turn over. Nothing, nada. Where could I have gone wrong? Did I miss something? In regards to the dizzy I'm real careful on what manner I apply torque bc I'm worried about breaking cam gear etc.

I have done the change based only on JP's instructions. For me, the wires were exactly the same.

If you have pulled the clamp and bolt out of the black PCM dizzy puck you should be able to spin it, or turn it back and forth a bit, and just pull it straight up and out. Can you turn it at all? That is how the system is timed, so it is supposed to spin. If you can't turn the thing at all, I'd grab the metal shaft with a super-big pair of pliers and give it a twist. There must be some junk in there, either rust or some other sticky substance, that is keeping it from turning freely. Once you break it free it will pull right out.

Can you take a photo of the plug and wires in question and post it here?

Hmm. Sucks that your dizzy is giving you such a hard time. Have you tried tapping on the shaft body while twisting and pulling upwards? Can you spin the dizzy at all?

As for the wires on the trigger plug, yes there are 4 wires on the plug. 1 of them is not used. Simply discard it. I mention it in my write up:

"Cut the last wire from the Trigger Plug and discard the plug and the last wire is not used".

See the wiring diagram and desrtskier's wiring explanation about halfway down the first page of this http://www.correctcraftfan.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=33526&PN=1&title=protec-ignition-replacement-question" rel="nofollow - thread

Hope this helps.

I had similar issues removing a distributor. I banged and pushed and prodded and heated until it seemed hopeless. I was just about to pull the entire intake until I decided to try to fabricate an attachment for my slide hammer.

You might try a chain wrench, which at least got mine "moving" (slightly).

I resorted to hammers, even big ones, and the thing wouldn't budge. I tried heat (propane) and those aerosol cooling sprays. I tried Kroil over the course of a winter. Nothing worked.

Here is the slide hammer contraption which finally freed the dizzy.

It was quite rusted in place. Recommend plenty of anti-seize on the DUI replacement.

While letting it soak in 50/50 Acetone I went shopping for a quality strap wrench with no luck. At one point I was looking at my gear pullers thinking of how to rig something up. After taking half the engine apart I was able to get a good pair of channel locks in there and twisted it out.... at 11pm. Wow that cap is big in there. I guess y'all know it BARELY fits in there.

Jerry, we're hitting the slalom course on Dora at 8;30. Idk if ill ski, think I may just drive as I'm anxious to get back here and finish this boat. We're supposed to spend the day on the water.   If you put in at Trimble, you'll see my purple boat in the yard when you drive by. Dad's '75 is at the campground docks for the day on Carlton. If you see us at any point, stop by!

Todd,
When was the last time you timed the engine?
Yes, there are reports that in some cases, the intake manifold needs to be ground down slightly for DUI's to fit.

I never timed this engine. It's new to me and had a few mechanical problems which led to more mechanical problems and swapping the pro tec was a no brainer at this point.

And the reason you didn't know that Pete is because Todd has not bothered to post a story or even pictured of his purchase

Stuck distributors on the GT-40 are common. The body of the distributor is some type of aluminum alloy. The engine is cast iron. Mix the two and one has the perfect recipe for galvanic corrosion from dissimilar metals. When disassembling the GT-40 in my Fish, we removed the front timing cover, cut the timing chain, slid the camshaft forward about 3/8", rotated the engine with the (distributor) facing down and took a long narrow punch and drove the distributor free from the bottom. We were only trying to salvage the camshaft as the engine was used in salt water and left to rust by the previous owner.

Ok, after a couple snaffoo's it's running. On the hose at the house, no problem. 3 minutes at the lake and it's at 210???

But that was its fastest 3 minutes since I've had it. I gained about 5 mph and probably 500rpms over the pro tec. I finally found the boats top end.

I originally had the initial set at 15*. Thought that was high but it seemed to like it. Test run and it got real hot real quick. I took seem timing out at the dock, set it at 10. It doesn't like 10 as much. Gave it a spin at 10* and still runs hot. Impeller was replaced 2 months ago, has 5 hours on it. I don't see the obvious. Strategy isn't sticking and the hull pickup is clear.

Come on Todd! Take a look through the diaries and you'll find plenty of boats that aren't pristine!

Since you replaced the impeller in the pump I would make darn sure the hose clamp on the intake side of the pump is very snug if not a double hose clamp on it. If it is sucking air between the intake on the bottom of the boat and the intake side of the pump it will not cool down its sucking air.

Since you had a lot of the engine apart to gain access, check that your RWP BELT is set good and snug, but not crazy tight, now that it's all back together. Maybe some belt slippage?

Posted By: Orlando76

I checked and re-checked all the connections. The RWP side wasn't pulled. Every hose connection on this boat is double clamped. I pulled thermostat and checked it on the stove. It opened up at 148*

I thought it could be the timing making it heat up but evidently it shouldn't be that drastic, at least not with it running decent.

I think I've lost my cool with this boat. No pun intended. I've done way too much in too short of a time span. I covered it up, taking it to the barn. And onto a quest for a different "new" boat at end of summer. I'll get back to this one in a few years.

Aggressively too much timing will get an engine to 210 on the double quick

He said she ran hot when he was at 10 degrees as well. I wouldn't consider that aggressive. I was told to set my initial timing to 12 degrees and she's been running fine since the swap.

If she runs fine on the hose with the same timing, but hot on the water, doesn't that rule out timing as the cause of the high temps?

Unfortunately what wont detonate on the hose with no load, still might when you get out there.

Except that it is a new DUI, and that is the only thing that changed. Unless he checked final advance then if it had a problem, like too much advance the results could be hot and soon catastrophic. I would pull plugs, look for signs of detonation, then put back together and confirm total advance is reasonable to low. Better safe than broke.

A better description of the symptoms on the overheat would be helpful as well.

On the hose I ran it at idle for 5 minutes maybe. Checked and played with timing. :15 later I drive across the street to the ramp, back the boat off. Tied it up. Shut it down. Pull trailer out. Load wifey into boat, cranked and ran 200-300 yards at 30mph. Mean time checking temp and I see it creep to 200. At this point I stop, shut it down, checked making sure I'm pulling sufficient water. Had the engine open on 107* heat index on a 90* lake and a 1mph wind. Dad eventually motors over to join the party and tows me back to ramp. I give it a few minutes, cranked it, set timing to 10* to idle it and suck water but it didn't like 10* (ran bad) so I bumped it up to 14 where it ran better but it still climbed in temperature while idling. So I shut it down, pulled out. After dinner I decided to check thermostat in a pot of water and just as I suspected it operated properly. Last weekend was basically my first time using the boat (not just test runs) and the temp never exceeded 170 and fluctuated appropriately.

When you were running it at 30mph and noticed it overheating, was the temp still climbing or did you not see which way the needle was moving? Could it have been coming down? When it overheated at idle, how hot did it get? Where did it start? Did you try bringing the rpm's up (2000-2500)?

You seem to be describing an overheat at both idle and speed (rare). A few more important details would be helpful (and maybe a few less of the inconsequential ones).

The only change between the successful runs from last weekend and the overheating you're having now has been the ignition swap?

Well, and the other wiring changes that went along with the dizzy swap.

Actually, was it confirmed with an IR temp gauge, or at least a hand to riser test, that the motor was actually overheating?

I'm wondering if this could be more of a gauge wiring/sender issue.
