I'm looking for the best one person towable for riders of 200 lbs and higher. I'm 6'2", 230, My son is 6'3" 245. We're big people. haha

I'd like a tube with an outer cover and something very strong with a stable ride. It will also be used for women and girls that are not as big as we are (1/2 the size!).

Most that I see say "up to 170lbs". That won't work.

Suggestions appreciated!

Thanks

I'm a total neophyte when it comes to tubeing, and I'm sure one of the pro tubers will chime in eventually.
But, wouldn't it be possible for you to get a 2 person tube and only one of you ride it at a time? I'm curious myself as to what the pro stance on this important issue is.

Also, Please watch this important safety video.

There are a lot of closet tubers here, but the only pro circuit tuber in the ranks is Pete. So, Pete, help the guy out.

Tubing Nationals are next week.

Also on ESPN8, the Ocho

Steve my regrets we're not as helpful as usual, just a little silly before the weekend.

Please linger, and we'll see if we can get your inquiry answered.

I concur the twofer inflatables could be suitable.

I think Obrian had a double delta death dart years ago that we gave some inapropiate abuse to, something like that should work

Your lucky. Where we live in Arizona the lakes aren't close so we go for the weekend and spend all day on the water. Once the water got rough there wasn't much else to do so out came the tube. I hate towing them but the kids loved it. Oh well!

That was our issue - that's why we learned to foil! Don't need flat water.......... Air Chair, Sky Ski, NeXt Foil.... Anything but tube!

Best for 200# ???      We will need more information.
We need to know what you're using for a Tube prop.
Tube MPH's ?
Rope length ?
Air temp ?
Helmet size ?
Boat HP ?
etc.....

OK I can take the ribbing. I'm not going anywhere.

I was a tournament slalom skier in college. Busted my eardrum in an accident in 1990. Never had the balance like I had before. Then came kids. Kept my 1983 Nautique until 1994. Babies, another baby in 1998. Bought a like new Nautique in 1998 and kept it until 2007.

Now I have another Nautique and I'm 50. Obviously not wakeboarding or skiing much. Some health issues mean that I don't have a lot of strength (double bypass at 45). So a tube it is for me! And they're a blast. My kids love it. Of course they ski and wakeboard too.

Just looking for something I can ride on and have fun!

Seriously Steve, the foils are GREAT. Unless you have significant vestibular impairment they are REALLY fun rides, easy on the body and ad a cool factor to the outing..... Now if you are jumping, I take back all I said above!

Come to a CCFan Mini and try a Foil. Don Adams is in your part of the country - look up TxFoilhead.

I vote for the air chair as well. Have never done it but seen it often. X AirFoils does their testing on my lake with some real fancy spork-bow boats.. In fact, TX Foil head had said these guys are some of the very best in the whole world. Not saying you should do the crazy awesome flips and stuff they do, but done in moderation, it looks to provide a gentle fun ride.

Also would be the exact polar opposite from tubing on the cool scale.

Come on Justin. Read more carefully. He's 50, says he's been messing around boats for most of his life, so lets say 40 years. That makes it 1975 that he started messing around boats. You were born in 2001-ish. So I would say that means he has been messing around with boats since before you were born, no?

Well, Steve. Welcome to CCF. Trial by fire. But you are a good sport and that will go a long ways around here. Did you really get your answer? Hope so. As a rule I don't do tubing. Until a year or so ago, I had never bought one and I've been doing this longer than you (I've got 10 years on you). My wife spotted one at a garage sale a year or two ago for $5 so I said sure, why not.   It was one of those 2 man, lay down on top kind. I never noticed that a regular 1 man tube had a weight restriction so I would guess one of those flat 2 mans would be fine for you. We rode ours 1 or 2 folks all the time.

I actually prefer the donut kind, reminds my of my growing up days, before 3/4s of the overtons catalogue was tubes and we used a real truck tire tube, the kind with the long valve stem that you could impale yourself on and the kind that you just tied the rope around and it would pinch down to the diameter of a pencil and stretch out about 15 feet before you planed off. I liked sitting with my butt in the middle, vs how most people lie down on them today. So that's why I prefer the donut ones vs the flat ones.

I have a confession to make. I've tubed. As a kid... Pre teens..... Young..... Hormones raging...... Girls bouncing around in a bathing suit.... Begging for one of them to fall and get dragged. Maybe a bounce or two landing in their personal flotation devices. Oh yeah, I've def logged some time on a tube. Solo? Never. And even once or twice as an adult, doing about 40 mph on a short line, if you stay on more than 20 seconds you aren't doing it right. When executed properly it should make bare footing feel as easy as knee boarding.

Y'all remember that tube about ten years ago who's objective and design was to go airborne and stay? That thing killed a few people. I forget the name and details... You had some cojones to ride that.

I have no problem with tubers as long as they STAY OUT OF THE SKI COVES AND FLAT WATER. Doing power turns and S turns may be fun for your rider but its ruins the water for everybody else. If you are going to tube have a little respect for others and do it in the main channel. Note the wake surfers could take the same advice . It simply amazes me that the same peeps that have been bitching for years about waverunners and tubers now think its perfectly fine to wakesurf all the way to the back of the ski cove.

Thanks! Gotta have a good sense of humor! I knew this thread would get some going! We're big skiiers (not just in size!) and my youngest is really getting into wakeboarding now! But a tube is fun and we never will mess up nice water for those that are skiing.

Nope, not me Steve. I've been around boats since I was about one year old.

Come on Justin. Read more carefully. He's 50, says he's been messing around boats for most of his life, so lets say 40 years. That makes it 1975 that he started messing around boats. You were born in 2001-ish. So I would say that means he has been messing around with boats since before you were born, no?

..... My message was a joke, since a lot of people on the site know I'm 14 besides him. So he didn't know that really he's been around boats longer than my dad. But hey, who cares?

I knew you were joking! No problem. Yes, I have kids older than you! haha I am 50, still feel 15 sometimes (not so much at other times) and still playing with RC planes, drones and boats. My dad (83 now) retired from the Coast Guard after 35 years and was the CO of the Port of Houston. We had boats before I was born (a wooden Chris Craft that I wish I had now!) and I grew up with a Wellcraft that I was towing around Texas at 16. My dad bought a brand new Ski Nautique in 1983 before I left for college at the University of Texas at Austin. We kept the boat there and I often scheduled my classes so I could be on the lake by noon or so. I skied with the UT ski team, some of my friends actually quit school when Sea World in San Antonio opened to go ski professionally there. I visited once and saw a girl I skied with on the top of a pyramid! haha I was sold on Nautiques and later bought my own and kept it for years. Sold it when the economy tanked and now back in it! I was gone too long! So no issues with having fun with me. I can take it! :)

I can only imagine if that tube kite came bac down and submarined. Like throwing out the world's biggest sea anchor at 3 5mph. Yikes.

I worked at a Malibu dealer in College that sold the Kite Tubes. We had to repo them from customers and cut the serial number out to send it back to the MFG.

I might or might not still have one with the serial number still intact.

We're now Nautique owners again! Picked up this 1995 with GT-40, 377 hours. This was from the original owner who has kept the boat in climate controlled storage (that his family owns 15 storage facilities) and covered from day one. New upper hoses, recent tune-up, fresh oil and transmission fluid change, no issues at all. And the boat literally looks brand new! He just bought a brand new G23. His wife was in tears as we pulled away. They loved the boat!

Only issue is the trailer. It's rough. I think he may have swapped it out for another before selling the boat. No way this is the trailer that held this beautiful boat. Fairly large amount of rust around the lights, needs new carpet, some reflectors missing, brake work and paint. Can anyone recommend a trailer restoration guy in the Houston area?

Here's the boat!

First thing you do is apply the ski pylon warning sticker.

Congrats on the new boat.

haha, OK OK. We will be pulling a tube occasionally. Not all the time. And not around skiers in good water. We are respectful.

I went with this:

Congrats on the new boat, looks AWESOME!

BTW, those sit down tubes are the type that gave my daughter a concussion, sitting up right while bouncing on waves is really not a good idea. That was the last time ANY of my kids rode a tube... (other then floating un-towed)

Other than bouncing your kids/friends around possibly causing a concussion or slamming them into a dock or other boat when you do the S-turns or U-turns; lets add a compartment for holding frozen shrapnel and aluminum projectiles. Oh and better yet, cup holders for easier launching!

Congrat's on the new boat. She looks good. The trailer does look like its taken a beating. Having overhauled two trailers you can do it at home for a lot less than paying someone to do it. All it takes is a little time and some elbow grease.

Love the Red/White/Blue colors.

Where in H-town are you? I lived in Spring for 12+ years. Loved Houston.

Great waterski spot: Trinity River. Head north up to Huntsville. Then go toward Riverside. The launch ramp is right there at the foot of the bridge. Calm, flat water 24/7. Very few boats. That was my favorite spot for my little Ski Nautique. Watch for gators, though. (I carried a .44 MAG in the glove box as a gator persuader)

It's actually Red/White/Black but thanks!

We're in Lakewood, near 249. I've skied the Trinity River many times. It's great! We have actually seen alligators there before. One time they had two on the ramp and the game warden was there trying to get them away using dead chickens on a stick. Nope. Not a job for me! haha They generally stayed away from where the boats where running.

Really nice looking NWZ, I'm another one that likes the red/black hull sides.

I just read the whole thread, got a few chuckles, thanks for being a good sport! Sorry to hear you can't ski at 50, there's a good number of us 50 and over's here that still give it our best.

Best of luck with the new ride!

Oh, I can still ski. Just not slalom like I used to do. I will ski on two skis just fine. I don't have the endurance right now to go very long. But that's why we bought the boat. I'll keep doing it and eventually I can go longer. (that's what she said)

And in between, I'll sit on the tube with the built-in cooler and enjoy a beverage as I am pulled in my chariot! haha

Sounds almost kinda luxurious.   What is the capacity in the radar beverage cooler?

Nice ski boat Steve.    Have you ever skied the lakes down around Santa Fe?

I agree. A friend of mine towed his 5 and 6 year old nieces on one of those at relatively low speeds. Their heads were flopping around like rag dolls and were coming within inches of slamming off each other. He didn't seem worried but I didn't enjoy watching it.

Gary,
Sorry, I don't but do have an excuse. My computer hard drive crashed so I'm on a small hand me down laptop that used to be my wife's until she dropped it screwing up the display. I can barely read any text. Besides that, this old guy hasn't been to the eye doc in at least 6 years. I'm way overdue for a prescription strengthening!
