Granted this could legitimately happen, but what's the chances it was altered with non-marine parts?

Sounds like they were very lucky not to get hurt. Interesting that the guy on the engine box was thrown rather than getting a behind full of fiery fiberglass. I wonder if there is any engine explosion testing done on inboards? I guess since the engine box is hinged and not latched it would flip up rather than trying to contain the blast. DD or V-Drive. V-Drive would probably be better.

My experience is it just pops up a bit. If they had time to go back for the boards I am guessing a fire extinguisher could have saved it... or they mighta died trying.

Wow! That's my lake! I do not recall ever seeing those guys or that boat on the lake. It is private, and pictures of it on the trailer point towards a local resident "putting in" at the ramp, which is guarded by police and surveillance cameras!
I would guess a fuel leak unnoticed and an ignition at "throttle" up? I hope they caught all the residue, as this is one of the cleanest spring fed lakes in the state. Glad they were all ok, could have been different.
