Does anyone know a special trick to removing the 1- 1/2" trans coulper nut to get to the rear main seal without pulling the trans? Its in an "86 PCM 351 commander? I had to split my shaft coupler and trans coupler with an old punch and hammer, so I am guessing my alignment job was good (Thanks to all on the site that walked me through that job!!). The problem is the 1-1/2" nut inside the trans coupler.. I can't figure out a way to grip or bind it`to loosen the nut to remove the coupler., so I can then change the seal....

The reason I am changing it is because somehow, one of my speaker wires came free and wrapped up on my drive shaft and worked its way to the rear seal, worked under it and bled out all my fluids. By the time I noticed, it was too late to pull out the wire...The seal is shot, or seems shot and must be replaced. Does anyone know the easiest method for removal? . And can I even go about it this way? I mean I feel like i am on the right path but you never know.... My engine rotation is clockwise or to the right.

50/50 acetone and ATF first then try an impact wrench with a chain or strap wrench on the hub.

+1 ^^.    Go with the impact and I don't remember having to hold coupler with anything......the nut just spun off and the coupler slid out the back.

Ok, I got it off. The impact worked and I took a piece of flat bar with a hole drilled in it and bolted it to the housing to keep it steady. Question. #2, the seal. Do I have to buy direct or will an after market seal work? I found one through the local parts store that's an exact match but only $15 vs. $65 through CC. Any help or advise will be appreciated.

is there a groove in the coupler where old seal was riding? if so it needs speedy sleeve or hone the surfact to remove the groove.

I got mine off either amazon or ebay.   got entire trans overhaul seal kit for about what you are pricing the seal.

Ken,
Find the # stamped on the seal and any power transmission distributor will be able to get it.

Man, you guys are great!!! I got the seal for $2.88 from an auto parts distributor compared to $65 though CC. Can't believe the mark up, but it shouldn't surprise me by now.

So I've got everything back together and changed my cutlas bearing out while I had the shaft removed...I also went ahead and repacked my shaft and rudder. My boat has never run this flawless and quiet. So glad I got it done before the wkend. Thanks guys.

Attached is a pic of the seal in case anyone needs one.it will save you over $60

Ken,
I sure hope that price of $65 didn't come from Zach!
