The fuel gauge on my 2005 206 works intermittently. Most of the time it reads either empty or half full. Does anyone have any advice on trouble shooting this problem?

Check all your connections. Make sure you have a nominal 12 volts to the gauge. Check you have a good ground to the tank/sender by Ohming between the tank ground and the engine block. It should read close to zero. Remove the sender wire at the tank and ground it. The gauge should peg at max. If all checks, remove the sender and Ohm it from min to max. It should give you a clean 30 to 240 Ohm reading. If not, replace the sender.

Jeff:

Pete's got it with a few clarifications for simple guys like me.....

Make sure the gauge pegs - at the sender pigtail on the tank, touch the two wires together.

Make sure you have 12v at the gauge (you should in you era boat - you would have gateway box weirdness if you didn't)

Your gauge and sender is not a 30-240 ohm as it's a WEMA sender (enclosed reed switches). Those generally don't go bad...... neither does the gauge..... so look for wiring issues and poor connections leading to voltage drop.

PS for folks without WEMA fuel or ballast senders - WEMA senders are enclosed and can not be adjusted. They have a pigtail for connection to wiring harness - do all your testing at the pigtail - DON"T OPEN UP THE HEAD.

I have become a WEMA sender expert.... It's perfect for me 'cuz you don't have to know anything - Ha!

Steve,

When I get my boat back I'm going to try these concepts. I upgraded to a WEMA sender on my 1993 but am not getting good readings at the gauge. I have this on the list of things I need to look into, but just have not got there yet. Does your diagnosis above apply to a 1993 boat? Have you ever heard of a bad sender coming from the factory? I wish I had checked mine before I installed it... Next time I rebuild I boat I'm checking everything first... but I was SO anxious to get it on the water. :)
