My '92 Barefoot with 5.8 HO PCM is backfiring at 4600 and will not allow higher rpm. Below 4600 rpm no problems. It starts, idles and accelerates fine. The engine still has the notorious Protec ingition. Coils look oke, no leaks.
Is this the first sign the Protec is shot?

Your problem is likely due to either timing or carburetion.

Since ProTech manages the spark/timing, ProTech could be the problem. However, that is not the symptom my ProTech was showing when it failed, but that doesn't mean that yours isn't about to crap-out and is the cause of your back-fire problem.

When was the last time that your carb was re-built?

I own the boat for six years now, never opened the carb.

Please explain in detail. Is it trueky back firing out the exhaust, or farting out the carb?   People use the term backfiring liberally.

I'll try to explain.
At 4600 rpm, the engine does not climb in revs anymore (WOT was previously 5100 rpm).
It produces a banging noise from the carb. Like it is misfiring. It's not the choking sound of an engine that does not get enough fuel at high revs, Thanks for your help!

So it is Popping out the carb or just running out of throttle ? If it is backfiring there could be a number of things wrong. More info will be needed.
