I am almost ready to put my new engine in and before i do i want to make sure everything is ok with the trans. I bought the boat with out an engine. The PO said that everything was ok but he is also the one who let the block crack.
I have flushed the fluid one time. I was wondering if there is some kind of rig i can make or buy to spin the input shaft and see if everything is working, or if i just have to gamble and put the engine in.

Don't gamble...rebuild it now and then have peace of mind. It may work fine the way it is for a short or long time...or it may slip and/or leak oil.
If you would have send it out to be rebuilt, then maybe gamble a bit.

Well.... Thats just it im fine with engines and other projects. But i have NO experience with trans. How much would a rebuild run me? If i did it and if i let someone else do it?
How hard is it to do?

If you can rebuild an engine, then you can rebuild the velvet drive. Manuals are available (probably in the reference section) and several people on this site have done the rebuild. It is not diffilcult at all. Very unlike a car transmission. The biggest thing is mark the orientation of the pump relative to the case before you start taking it apart. I understand that a total rebuld is less than $500.00 in parts.

David F is right there not as complexed as a car trans..there easier.. good advise on the pump rotation..I justed marked mine with a punch..there is only two sets of clutchs..foreward/reverse..there made of brass like the old Ford F.M.X.'S. and should not be too much of a hassel to find.. (if you even need to replace theme)..your local transmission supplie shop should have a complete overhaul kit for your model..there cheep and easy..wash all the parts with solvent..use some vassoline on the seals and reasemble. sand the clutch steels with 120 to remove the glazing and have peace of mind..

ok you guys talked me into it. i have everything in the reference section and nothing gives a step by step process. So if someone with could provide that i would appreciate it. i know that i need to index the pump for a standard rotation engine, and change the prop. Then i have the task of re aligning everything. If i cold get some direction on that also. You have to excuse me im used to working on auto drive train.
Can this be done with out taking it out?

Has to come out to come apart. I got parts from ebasicpower.com. About $500 including a new pump as mine was broken. If you are just doing clutches and seals it should be much less. I used the "Velvet Drive Marine Transmission Service Manual Models 70C & 71C" manual from the reference section and it was fairly good step by step. I only bought the gaskets, seals and snap rings I would be replacing, if you get the kits you wind up with a bunch of stuff you don't need and it costs more, too. This was my first time into a transmission and thinking about doing it was the worst part.

My 71C kit was $85 from Aftermarket Marine in New Orleans, 800-349-2628. Can't get much more reasonable than that.

An auto mechanic friend rebuilt my burned-up tranny last summer. It was that way when I got the boat. It overheated again right away after the rebuild.
Bill Rice alerted me to the fact that we probably put a snap ring in wrong, which is a common misstep for people who don't know these transmissions. I suspect the tranny was previously rebuilt wrong and we just repeated the problem. Anyway, we'll get it right this time.
