Casey,
Welcome to CCfan. Pictures of your project will certainly help. Is the engine the original to the boat? http://www.correctcraftfan.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=21279&title=shaft-strut-alignment-video" rel="nofollow - So you understand the principals of a direct drive inboard, I suggest you start with taking a look at this video.

The 307 OMC was an option in '72, so there are Mustangs out there with small block Chevies for sure. You'll need to prop the boat appropriately with the extra cubes. Hopefully you're installing a reverse rotation engine to keep the boat from leaning to stbd excessively.

Welcome!

Thanks peter! I pretty sure the engine is not original. Im not sure a 5.7 was even an option in 72. ill try and post some pictures as soon as i figure out how to.

Yes its a reverse rotation engine. what cubes? and whats appropriate?

Reverse rotation- nice!

350 was never an option in the 16' mustang. The larger displacement (cubic inches) will require a prop with more pitch in order to get optimal performance from it. The most common engine/prop combo for that boat would have been a ~220hp 302 and a 12x14 federal prop. An old school hand finished (federal or oj) 12x15 would be a good place to start. If buying new, splurging on an equivalent sized Acme (1214, 12.5x13) would also be a strong consideration.

i just got the engine back from the machine shop(full rebuild). I think ill buy a new prop when i get there. for now i just need to figure on getting the engine back in and working properly. I hope I'm not getting into a bunch of fab work!

Casey,
Does the engine have adjustable mounts? If so, the install should be pretty easy. If not, then wedges are used between the mounts and stringers. Still not too bad of an install just not as convenient. Keep alignment in mind. I suggest you do/check the strut to log alignment first before you drop the engine in. Speaking of stringers, what's their condition? have you checked them? Now's the time to check without the engine in place.

the mounts are adjustable! thats good to know. i am going over the strut to log tonight. the stringers had two soft spots that were injectable (not bad) that i glassed over when done. the guys at the shop were aware of the RR. I have to go but thank you two greatly for you time

Yes, lags. What I didn't mention is material. In the good old days, The lags were silicon bronze which has a fantastic corrosion resistance but they don't make them anymore. The next best is stainless but, make sure they are type 316. The 18-8 stainless from China you find at the home improvement or hardware will rust. Mcmaster has the 316 in 1 piece quantities.

Gotta say Pete, I've never witnessed Silicon Bronze ever being used as engine lags.
I believe most were all grade 5.
Fastenal has S/B lags, But they are very expensive and they only have 3/8" and 1/4".

BTW, I never have checked with Fastenal since I strongly disapprove of the company. Are the S/B lags square or hex heads?

I went to install the motor mounts yesterday, and noticed that one moves freely and the other is super stiff. are they supposed to move? (this is my first inboard boat)

Casey,
One may be corroded more than the other but, once installed, mounts should be tight both up and down as well as side to side.

How about those pictures?

Casey,
Submitting to the diary section is great. Keith reviews each submission and then will enter yours. We sure don't want any Matercrafts showing up there!

For posting pictures in the forums, use "post reply" and not the "quick reply" Click on the icon of the tree with the up arrow. Boxes will come up to prompt you for loading from your computer. Some also like myself use a photo hosting site like photobucket. Give it a try.

Is the windshield from a early 80's tique? The 72' brochure shows a split windshield. Cool project

I'm guessing 82-84 mustang... I suspect the 82-84 Tique (same as 80-81SN) would be too wide for the 16' boat.

I forgot the mustang was made into the 80's. That would make more sense. Regardless that silver straight windshield looks great on those narrow hulls

Hang on to those Pete, they're about like having gold.
The 3" at fastenal are over 36.00 Each.

Are those earmarked for the Flexi ?

Al,
No, I bought square head lags as well as bolts and nuts for the complete launch project. They as well as other parts are getting galvanized which is fitting for the era. I found a vendor that only deals in square head fasteners. I'm waiting to sent them for the hot dip just to make sure I have the quantities and sizes correct.

Yes, the Fastenal S/B are sure up there in $$ and they aren't even square heads! Actually, it's their pricing that has turned me off to the company. We tossed them out of the company I worked for after I found out their tactics.

I have owned a few non Bowtie powered Correct Crafts... Thats the price I had to pay to stick with CC... Until now!!

When my buddies saw Ford or Chrysler power in the boat, I would tell them the engines run backwards and the factory figured out they ran better that way than forward.

Ok, most of the work is done to get the boat fired so I can break in the motor. I had to rebuild the wiring harness. now the problem is that the starter isn't engaging the fly wheel. so it has to be the wrong starter or the fly wheel. right? I had the starter bench tested and every thing looked good.. I can hear the clunk of the Bendix poping out. I'm just not to sure at this point of what to do next.
