I'm happy to announce the release of Design it, Drive it : Speedboats!

More info and videos can be found here:

This is a sophisticated simulation that lets you design and drive your own speedboats in real time from around 30 design variables. The physics simulation involves the computation of thousands of forces on the hull that depend completely on your hull design. Dynamics such as chine walk, porpoising, and the dreaded blowovers will arise naturally as a result of your design and what you do with the engine trim and jackplate.

Experiment with hull dimensions and shape, deadrise angles, pad design, step sizes and positions, jackplate setback and lift, engine trim, engine power, propeller pitch, and lots more.

It works on single or multiple monitor setups as well as the Oculus Rift virtual reality headset running on Windows PCs. Full customizeable controller support is included for steering wheels like the Logitech G27 with sophisticated force feedback, gamepads, keys, joysticks , etc..

As of this announcement, it's currently limited to vee bottom style outboards. You can get pretty close to flatbottoms by setting the bow and transom deadrise angles near 0 degrees and reducing the molded depth and transom height to the minimum. If community support is solid enough then it may be expanded into other boat types some day.

Thanks for looking! Questions and comments are welcome. I'll be lurking. :)

This company contacted me yesterday about adding support for their motion platforms. Definitely interested!

I wrote an article about chine walk. Discuss!

Added support for twin and triple outboard setups today. Here's a new trailer showing that off:

Ok, Todd, interesting stuff, but I am probably the only guy on this whole website who is concerned about chine walk with an outboard. There might be one other guy who has a correct craft I/O that is set up to approach the speeds where he gets into the chine walk issue.

There are a whole host of folks on here who are trying to push their old direct drive inboards WAY past the (speed) design limits of the hull and are getting all sorts of funky, wierd hydrodynamic and aerodynamic oscillation issues. You would probably get a lot more interest if you discussed some of those abnormalities.

Thanks, Skutsch. I'll need to take a look around the forums and see if I can find some people talking about the issues you're bringing up.
