Well this is dumb. I just want to put on a shiny new plaque to replace the old, yellowed original.

Got the old one off (it was cracked around the light) but now how do I get the new plaque on? I thought the light would be a plug to remove. Do I really have to follow those wires somewhere under the dash just for this?

Yes - sorry. No easy plug. I would also use care replacing the light in the new plaque as the clearances can be tight. You don't want to snap the hole in the new one.
