I know many have been through this problem so this is a reminder to those who have and a warning to those who haven't. If you live in the "corrosion belt", don't leave your ball mount in the receiver when not using it. They rust in!! Years ago I fabricated a stainless mount for my 95. Now that it's going to be donated, I wanted to save the ball mount. I had actually tried removing it months ago without success. Penetrating oil, sledge hammer, drilling the pin out (it was rusted in too), tow strap around a tree (all that it did was rip the bark off the tree!) and driving without a pin 3000 miles with the utility trailer without any luck! So, the next step was to remove the receiver so I could get it in a hydraulic press. Sounded simple but that was also problematic!! Four of the bolts won't budge even with penetrating oil for 2 days, the impact and the breaker bar! Compounding the problem is the bolt heads to the boxed frame rail are hidden, and aren't accessible without removing the bumper. Same issue with the bumper - Very stubborn corroded fasteners that won't budge or in very awkward places ! So, the final solution was to get the Portaband (most of the way through) and then the Sawsall out! I thought after the impact, the raining of rust particles and dirt on me was done but the Sawsall got more!!

Chris, I'm not familiar with the stuff. I'll do a search and find out what it is. I have heard of using anti seize on the ball mounts but that sure creates a mess. It's always a challenge to keep the anti seize off hands and clothing. I'll never forget (nether will my wife! ) when I had just anti seized the door latches on the Burban and then later that day we went out to a party dressed in some decent cloths. I don't think my wife ever got the stuff out of her blouse!!

In some states like Illinois it is illegal to leave the ball mount assembly in the receiver when not towing anyway.

Funny thing was several years ago the Suburban quit on me (one of the 5 times the solenoid driver module went out) blocking traffic since there wasn't a shoulder to pull off the road. The state police came by and wanted to push me to a nearby driveway with their front push bar. They couldn't due to the ball mount being stuck in the receiver. 20 minutes went by waiting for the tow truck and not one word was mentioned about leaving the mount in while not in use. Ether the officers were being nice or they weren't aware of the law which I doubt so I'd say the law isn't enforced.

I've spent hours this fall underneath our Land Cruiser coating the frame and undercarriage with CorrosionX and scaling off any thicker rust with a needle scaler. Total PITA and this stuff smells pretty nasty as well. Really hoping that stuff keeps the corrosion at a standstill on all that steel under the truck.
I refinished/repainted the entire hitch with POR15 and a surface coat, looks great. However, I wanted a way to prevent the interior of the receiver, which is constantly ground to raw metal by the draw bar/hitch when used, from looking rusty and sh1tty over time so I coated the interior surface of the receiver with CorrosionX too for the hell of it. So far after 2 helpings of road salt/snow the stuff seems to be holding just fine. The bare metal just stays bare metal which is neat. It's nice that it's an oily-ish coating vs. a fixed paint finish for any repeated interference application like this.

Reason #10000 to move south, no rust...
When I moved to GA took my Mustang GT in for tires and they called me into the shop with great alarm. The whole staff was under the car marveling at all the rust on the undercarriage and the manager actually said he was afraid the car would break in half, I just laughed and said "first time under a northern car, eh boys?"
Pertaining to the other thread discussion, the 5.0 Mustang GT definitely qualifies as the world's worst snow car but oh what a rocket it was.....

I am not sure I understand the reasoning behind leaving the receiver in, yeah it might provide some protection in a low speed impact, but is it really worth this:

And then your mount and ball just rust that much faster. I always remove it. Not worth the pain in the shin or poking a hole in the garage door.

I normally remove it for the above reasons but with the newer truck it also messes up the backup sensors and you then get error messages. When in Florida though I put up with it and leave it in,I cannot tell you how many times people have hit me

Several of my buddies leave theirs in and a few of them cannot be removed as they're rusted in place.

I always remove mine so we don't crack our shins but usually do it when I get home from the river and put everything away.
Last year I got pulled over on the way home from boating because it was still in, just gave me a warning but said next time he would write me up. Illinois is so lame, I can't wait to get the hell out of here.

I second that emotion Alan! Been doing the same thing. The property taxes in McHenry county are outrageous. Almost confiscatory. Not sure what county you're in, but, all the Chicago collar counties are in the same, uh, boat! Not too hard to figure out you gotta go south, exactly where is still in the works.
A little property tax story for you. A few years ago my brother in law and I were talking property tax. He lived in Indianapolis and was complaining how his taxes had gone up that year to just over $600. I was sort of surprised that his taxes could be as high as mine at $600+ per month then he corrected me as his were $600 per YEAR.

Exactly Kevin,I know they were screaming in Florida about license fee's just a governor ago. Another example here in Illinois you don't pay income tax on retirement checks, but your real estate taxes never go down. In Florida when the housing market tanked and the home values went down our taxes actually went down. The Mrs has talked of leaving Illinois too but I'm afraid with the roots so deep I might not survive the transplant. Alan has the right idea, drive the motorhome, spend some time in an area and see how the wind blows.

Gary/Kevin, Lot's of reasons we want to get a move on, taxes being just one of them. Quite honestly the main reason is we're summer people and we're just a little tired of the winter blues. We'll have grand kids coming in a few years so we're trying to plan an exit from the business and things that tie us down so we can enjoy them and our boating friends. I could honestly see us being gypsies in the motorhome for a month or two each year.

For some of you mid-westerners you should consider the Carolina's. You still get all the seasons and can (with a bit of effort) enjoy boating year round. Depending on where you are located taxes are pretty reasonable and when compared to what you paying they would have you doing the Snoopy dance.
For those who attended the Badin Lake Mini - our annual taxes are ~2k per year. Granted we have a septic system, city water and no trash pick up but I'll take it. Our lot is right at 1 acre with 200' of water frontage.
Our primary home (~16 miles outside of downtown Charlotte) is roughly $2,600/yr for a 5 BR / 3 bath.

Taxes on 3200 sq ft home with 170' water front are about 1/3 of what they were for my average house in the burbs up on Cape Cod. Admittedly, this house was a fixer-upper, but cost about 3/4 what that house in the burbs sold for., tho now it is worth more.. (just call me Mr Handy) Our first house down here (just under 200o feet, 80 foot water front cost about 1/2 of what the burbs house sold for.
Obviously, there is no one right answer, and if florida is what you want, that's great, but some of you have had a taste of North Carolina, and it is great. We liked the geography, (not the taxes or weather) of NY and MA but we haven't looked back since coming down here 3 years ago. Like Greg said, you CAN get on the water all year. Its not hot and lovely like FL all year, but if you like some variety in weather, and maybe want to be a little closer to whoever you are leaving behind up north, and a very reasonable cost of living, NC is ideal. If you are not ready to retire, Charlotte or Raleigh can have you near the water and still find a job. If you can retire, there are a number of more remote choices. Anyone on a recon trip is welcome to stop by.

A few of our neighbors built homes in Nebo, NC. They are on Lake James. It's out near Ashville. We went down there two years ago for the Holidays. It was pretty chilly (30's/40's) in the mornings. But, we got back to Chicago and there was a blizzard going on and I had to shovel the car out from under a foot of snow. But, gorgeous scenery in that area.
Indy.....My mom has 2 acres of beautiful wooded property just north of Indy (Fishers/Noblesville). Taxes are ~@2K/year. Her house is an old 3 br ranch, but, beautiful property. That area used to be farm country when I was a kid.....maaaany years ago. It is not even recognizable anymore with so much growth. But, that area always gets high marks for quality of life, and low costs.
We have a 4 br/2 bath home on a 1/4 acre lot. Taxes are $7K, and I suspect they are getting ready to give us a good intercoursing this next year due to the bad state of affairs in IL.
I could see doing Lake Geneva/Delavan WIS in the summer, and heading south/southwest in the winter. I like Alan's idea of hopping in an RV and roaming. Might use Indy as a home base for low taxes. Wisc is no bargain on taxes. One of the higher tax states.
There is a cool website I found. www.findyourspot.com. 8 sections of questions on climate, geography, culture, weather, etc. My spot was Bloomington, IN. South of Indy. Home to IU. Springfield, MO ranked high too.

From the NC crowd.
I have said many times I don't think there are too many areas where we could afford to live as we do and have as much quality of life as we do here. We have reasonable home prices, reasonable taxes, and good schools are not hard to find. We are on a lake on a little cove with two other houses on the cove. 30 minute to an international airport. 20 minutes to downtown with major university (Duke), 30 minutes to UNC. 2.5 hours to the mountains, 2.5 hours to the ocean. Seasons, but rare ice/snow. Hard to beat. I have been offered jobs all over but have stayed because I didn't think we could have done as well in any of those places.

North Carolina is a beautiful state and one of the few places I'd considered moving to, if I had to move. I've been to the Asheville and Charlotte areas and they both seem to offer great life styles. When I first went to Asheville back in the 1980's I couldn't believe how cheap real estate was, but I understand now that it has sky rocketed and is more expensive than in Maine.
In Maine we have long winters, short summers, low incomes, high taxes, high property prices, expensive heating seasons, huge mosquitos and black flies, but people keep moving here.
North Carolina also seems centrally located which makes it easier to get to reunions.

There is another option and I took it. More snow, longer winters, colder providing winter activities besides the summer activities. I do have a well and septic but they are very manageable. The "big" city is 20 minutes away, the smaller city is 12 minutes and the town of Three Lakes is 5 minutes. I have 2 lakefronts at 100 feet each. I can boat on 28 contiguous lakes ranging in size from 200 to 2000 acres. I'm happy to no longer have the 14K property taxes and now just the one at 2.4K. Also no utilities and no homeowners insurance on the old house.

Georgia also a good alternative; lakes, mountains, ocean. Quite affordable. Just for comparison, our annual property tax this year was $2300 for a 4 bedroom/2.5 bath on 3/4 acre in very nice suburb 30 miles south of Atlanta.
Taxes on our much smaller house in CT were far higher and had to be spread out into the monthly PITA mortgage payment and all that, now I just walk into the tax office once a year and pay the bill.....

Getting back to the stuck ball mount in the receiver, I just picked up the mount. Not having a hydraulic press, I took the cut off receiver to a shop in town. It was stuck big time - it took all of the 50 tons the press could build up!! When rust expands, it does amazing things. The mount is now cleaned up, convert-a-ball installed and ready to go on my, per Kevin, not so manly Forester tow vehicle!! Trust me, the mount will not stay in the receiver when not in use!!

Someone mentioned linked above the Weather tech bump step. Don't know much about those but will vouch 100% for their laser custom fit-by model floor mats, the ones that come up the sides if you are looking. quite tough, and fit like a glove to all the contours of the floor and sides, just pick year/make/model.
I tend to trash factory mats quickly, and I have found, that although a bit pricy, these are worth every penny and will also improve resale value. My problem is just sand and mud, I would think particularly for you snow boys these are a no-brainer......

We have to find a place that does not have ticks, alligators don't worry me now. As to the Weather Tech stuff,it is nice I have mats in all my vehicles. Made a special trip to the factory last summer to go to their store, quite an impressive place.

I believe the Illinois law is something like any mount extending 4" or more past the bumper needs red/orange marking to be OK.
