I know we visited this topic a few years back over the winter and I remember there are some very knowledgeable audiophiles on the site (Alan?). I have been using some lousy temporary speakers while I looked for the the time to replace the suspension on an old set of Boston Acoustics A70s. They are nothing special but for around $25 I got a foam kit and replaced it this afternoon. I hooked them up and found that in addition to the suspension being out to lunch one of the voice coils is shot. I haven't dabbled in these old stereos for a long time and I have no idea if there is anything compatible with the components or what I should look for in speakers. My stuff is nothing special, just old. It is an SAE MK XXX preamp and a Sony TA3200F Amp putting out a real 100W/channel and 8 ohm like pretty much everything back then. I had the amp serviced and re-capped a few years back so it should have some life left in it. Can anyone point me in the right direction? I'm not looking to break the bank on this one, I still have Mustang parts to buy. I want to keep the SAE / Sony set up since I have had it since 1973 so it's sentimental baggage.

I've had a pair of Large Advents that I bought in 1974 sitting around my basement for the past 20+ years that have foam rot. I finally just decided to bring them to the dump because I'll probably never fix them. Where'd you get the foam kit?

Wow a pair of A70's. Unless they have some sentimental value I wouldn't spend much time or money on them. You could run down to best Buy and get 10x the speaker for what it would cost you put in new drivers.
For what it's worth go to http://www.parts-express.com/" rel="nofollow - parts express they will have what you need. You could probably browse the hifi forums and find out what others have done to replace drivers for that speaker.

not sure if the specs are correct but the seller seems to think it is a replacement.

John, Have you Ohm'd out the bad coil? Are you sure it's the coil itself and not just a bad connection from the winding to the terminal?

I have an early 90's Adcom system with Infinity speakers. I have re-edged the speakers with kits from these guys http://www.speakerrepair.com/" rel="nofollow - Orange county speakers . Good quality and pretty easy to install.

Similar, Have some 30 yeat old Scott enclosures with drivers that had foam rot. replaced all drivers with parts from Madisound, Audax tweeters, Peerless woofers. forget the mids. sounds great, people have remarked that are into it.
Could be fun to throw some parts at it.

I don't want to put any more effort or money in the A70s. No sentimental baggage there. I'm would like to know if anyone has a suggestion for moderately priced replacements, new or used, I had Advents long ago, but threw them out when the foam suspension went. I have a pair of Magnapans in the basement, but they don't fit in any room and are not good for this purpose (or any other depending on your taste). I didn't put the meter on it Pete because the connections look good on the affected speaker but it has some distortion. I think I'm done with these.
