Hi guys! So I've owned the Atom Skier for 4 years now and have never adjusted the valve lash on the 256 Y-block. I'm a stickler for maintenance and per the manual downloaded from this site, it says to adjust the valves every 100 hrs, hot, at .019.
So I don't know the last time they were adjusted or if I should even mess with it if I'm not hearing valve noise (mechanic mentioned to me not to worry about it if I'm not hearing valve noise). Is it something that you guys do every so often on the Y-blocks (or anything with flat tappets)? Do you do it hot or cold? What gap do you use? Found a YouTube video that walks through the process, so it doesn't look that hard to do, but I just don't want to do more harm than good. Thoughts?

Jason, FYI, I have never adjusted mine. Your mechanic is half correct. If you don't hear them clicking, it could be good or bad. Bad if they are too tight not allowing the valves to close all the way with full spring pressure. Running a compression check and leak down test will tell you plenty good or bad.

Thanks Pete! I guess I shouldn't say I don't hear them clicking...I do hear what I would call normal valve noise, kind of like a sewing machine...for what that's worth.

I don't feel you have anything to worry about. The key time to check the valve lash is after the approximate 50 hour break in. Still, a compression check wouldn't hurt. If you do one, make sure you get back to us with the results.

Doesn't hurt to check them, especially if you don't know when it was done last. If the engine runs smooth and they're not noisy, they are probably fine. I'd check them hot. We've found that using the cylinder companion method, I believe that's was it's called, is the easiest way to do it. Manual says .019 hot. We go by the manual.
Pete, not quite sure why you'd recommend a compression test and a leak down test when someone is asking about routine maintenance?
