Yup. People do stupid things in winter, like parking their 6500 pound SUV's on ice when it's nearly 40F and there are puddles of water around their vehicles. This is Winterfest 2016 at Lake Geneva, WI yesterday February 7. 15 vehicles went through the ice of which 5 were able to drive away, the remainder of which are deemed to be a total loss due to water damage m ------------- 2008 MasterCraft 197TT 1996 Nautique Super Sport 1988 Waterlogged Supra Mariah |

It always pays to check how thick the ice is!!  Our annual ice fishing jamboree has hundreds of vehicles on the lake and that out in the middle. It's my understanding that it was actually the city of Lake Geneva that directed the cars onto the lake for extra parking! Wow. Imagine directing traffic onto the ice then watching the cars sink. Jeff, Yes, the cars were in shallow water. It was winterfest in Lake Geneva. Surprised at the total loss on many of them if they didn't completely submerge. It's pretty clean fresh water, seems like they could be dried out, fluids changed, and be OK. It's the same here. The Wisconsin DNR gives you 24 hours to get any vehicle out of any body of water. If you don't, then they start the daily fines. Environmental assessments are required as well. I had a friend who put his loaded (full of propane tanks) pickup through the ice in the middle of a 2000 acre lake. He had friends in the logging business so they went at it with a couple log skidders (as well as several cases of beer!). They ended up having to cut a path in the ice almost to shore. By the time they got it out, the pickup was hardly recognizable! We went up Friday night to see the festivities and have dinner with some friends. The excitement on the ice "parking lot" was either Saturday or Sunday. I talked to my friend who we went with on Friday night, and he said the city was charging $3K to tow your car out, and the state was issuing a $1000 fine for pollution. Ouch! Coupled with the complete loss of your car, and some healthy fines and fee's, that is one expensive outing. And I thought my dinner was expensive.

Gary is living the good life down South. All of us up here in the frozen tundra of the North must at least, for a moment, (being totally honest now) wish we were down there in the warm sun. I would never want to give up the North, because we have these things called natural, freshwater lakes that are absent alligators and for the most part poisonous snakes, and definitely sharks. We also have NICE summers. Gary-- hope you don't have anything against Lake Geneva--- it is a real treasure and mid-week on a calm Summer day, it has lots of places to ski, eat, and even stay the night. I don't know what it is like on weekends, but probably not much different than the insanity of the Chain of Lakes in Northern IL. No and the answer is NO! Not as big a lake as Green but has much larger boats on it and busy as heck on the weekends, We'd get destroyed in our little toy boats on that lake.

This is true Pete! But I saved a sh%#load on incidental parking costs. I will have to go to Lyons one of these days, and try your place. I like trying new places. We normally stay over at Lake Lawn Resort in Delavan, and eat at Mars Resort on Lake Como. Great places, and not as touristy as LG. |

Peter, You mention a reunion on LG and then mention the ACBS Blackhawk show. Understand they are two completely different functions. You can't compare the two. Do plan on attending the show come fall. It's one of the best and I'd say the best in the Midwest. You'll see plenty of beautiful boats. Even though I've moved, I still maintain my Blackhawk chapter membership as well as the Glacier Lakes chapter membership. Pete, I understand they're completely different--just throwing the idea out there for a late season get-together. It's only a 40 minute drive for us, and my wife Lori and I are always looking for stuff to do. We might launch our boat for a day just to experience the things Lake Geneva has to offer. Peter, Do take the boat over and explore. I believe LG is a one of a kind area and lake. I do suggest trying to get on the lake on a weekday. As Alan mentioned, the lake just like GL can get real rough especially when the large boats are out. One year when I had the Atom there, I vividly remember taking it out for the lake cruise everyone does at the end of the Saturday show. I didn't get very far out of the Abbey harbor before taking major water over the bow. Soaking wet, my wife (the dog too) turned around and headed back. One of the highlights of the show (but regrettably limited to participants in the show) are the pre show activities. Lake tours of absolutely beautiful homes/estates in the lake launches that are unique to LG have been thrilling to say the least. Car collections, unique boats and even model trains are just some of the things I've seen. Lake Geneva is a bit like when we did the Northeast reunion on Lake George. The only time of year it was feasible was before or after tourist season and since our Midwest reunion is mid July it's just not a suitable venue. |

CQ, really...., like most can wait and plan on "the wind report" Can you "plan" for how many 35 foot cruisers are going to be on the lake??? Everyone knows, who launch a small boat on Geneva on a weekend, knows its going to be rough and wet... Peter asked about a gathering, which I assume would be on a weekend... Yeahhhh no fun.. Sure Green Lake is brutal most of the time, but at least you don't see any big boats out there except for the PT109 ha... Peter, just go out there during the week if you want to experience the lake. Lake Geneva is really a cool lake. But, not ski boat friendly, even on windy week day afternoons. We would launch in Fontana in the AM, and eat lunch in LG. I remember days heading back to Fontana we would encounter wind generated 2' chop. Brutal, even in a Southwind or '87 Martinique. For boating in that area, we really prefer Delavan Lake. Much more ski boat friendly. Quite a few old CC's on the lake as well. Como is a nice little lake too. Almost no one there during weekdays, and not bad at all on weekends. |
