Im haveing a starting problem out of my 79 Nautique. When you turn the key it will crank sometime & sometimes it will just click. When it starts clinking I tap on the solenoid & it will start right up. So I went & bought a new PleasureCraft Solenoid installed it & now it cranks up but the starter keeps running. I went & exchanged that one for another one & it does the same thing. So I installed the original old one & it cranks for now just fine. I installed it just like the original was. Only thing I could see is that there might be a difference between the old Solenoid & the PleasureCraft one, but they look alike. Help Please!! Thanks!

I cant lend any information regarding the behavior of the two pleasecraft solenoids but i can share some personal experience i had with the solenoid that came on my boat from the PO.

On that solenoid the terminal that my starter cable went on had some bad treads and it couldn't get tight enough to maintain good contact - some times it would spin the starter and some times it wouldnt. I'm sure your treads are fine but i have to wonder if when you reinstalled your old solenoid you may have corrected a poor contact condition.

Sometimes taking the main stud cables off can rotate the the stud which is part of the contact inside temporairily curing the problem. Strange results on the new solenoids. Try testing it without the starter cable hooked to the starter so it doesnt crank all the time and see what a test light does ther instead.
