I'm parting out an 82' 2001 and I have steering cable, throttle cable, and trans cable in great condition. Should I hold on to them for backups for my 90' SN or will they not fit?

If I had to guess I would say yes you could but I don't know when they went to the Morse MV-2 throttle control and does it use the same cable. It's the weekend so somebody who knows for sure will chime in.
** Edit** Looking at the 90 brochure it looks like the MV-2 came out in 90. I would think all that was changed is the neutral safety knob added to the throttle lever. The actual mechanism should be the same.

Correct. All control cables will be the same. Same steering cable 82-90 if you have a big-t helm. Some late 90 models may have gotten different helms.

I personally, would not go to the trouble of installing used cables. They seem to fail with no warning ( not always) and if you are going to the trouble, I would want a fresh cable. I understand about being on a budget, but you have to weight the fact that you may be soon doing the swap out of a new one in a short amount of time.

I 2nd Donald's response of not recycling used steering cable unless you recently installed this in the 82..

Yes it will work as a backup.
If I snapped a steering cable and had a used one laying around that fit you bet I'd use it before going out and buying a brand new one. I don't think I'm the only one that would either. For those living in fear of used cables how come you are not swapping them out as routine maintenance?

Exactly. If it's tight throw it away. If it's loose go for it
Original on my 86 lasted about 1400 hours. Broke because I didn't replace it when it got tight. Original in the 85 with 570ish hours and 30 years. Buttery smooth.

Agree with HW and Zachy. If it's smooth I'd use it. Probably wouldn't bother installing a used cable if it were the $100 generic variety that was used prior to '82- but a $300 specialty cable like the one in question? I'd probably keep it around if it felt good.

You don't want it too loose...

Thanks guys! Cable seems to be in great condition and operates very smoothly. I've only owned the 82' for a few months so I'm not sure how old the cable is. My 90' has had a rough life and I bought it strictly for having a towboat for watersports. I'm not really looking to throw money at it when I have decent parts on hand.
