Getting ready to install a new rub rail rope on my 89 ski nautique.l have been looking up information on how to clean the rub rail before installing the new rope.Found either on here or another site that if you take some .0000 steel wool, wd40 and rub it on the rail it will make it look better. Has anyone tried this teqnique? Or do you all have a way that works better for you? |

Don, I've used Mother's Back to Black with some success but it doesn't last very long. I however would still give it the test. | I may have to try that out @8122pbrainard! Thanks I want to try to essentially "sand" down the surface without cutting in to rail to much.Tried the steel wool and wd40 last nite on a small area.Didn't look too bad.Thought about buying a new rub rail but way too much |

Don, Both the steel wool and WD40 scare me. Steel wool rusts so any small pieces that break off and stick to the work will create a rust stain. It's not an option for me with anything marine nor anything wood. I've never been a fan of WD40 ether. (I'm surprised that hasn't come up yet in my "roasting" ) It's my opinion that it's just a highly marketed thin petroleum product and just evaporates quickly. When I had my rub rail removed for polishing the gel I used the buffer and paste polishing compound to clean it up which did work wonderful and is really the best long lasting option. If it's still on the boat that isn't a very good option though. Get some black liquid shoe polish. The cheap stuff with the foam rubber applicator built into it. Put a couple coats on it and make sure it dries well between coats. Any polish that you get on the gel coat wipes right off very easily. It's an old school auto detailing trick. Works amazingly well on black plastic trim on autos and lasts a surprisingly long time. Especially any trim that has been sun faded. Very easy to apply and really cheap besides. ------------- When people run down to the lake to see what's making that noise, you've succeeded. Eddie |

I've used Wizards Black Renew, to restore the color on my rub rail. Works really well in bringing the black back on this and other rubber and plastic parts. I only recently used it so I can't speak to the longevity. ------------- 96 Super Sport Previously: 95 Sport Nautique, 1980 Ski Supreme |

Consider yourself lucky,bite the bullet and buy a new one. Your going to go thru all that work of trying to clean it then you have to reinstall and put in the rope. After all that your going to be disappointed. I went thru the same when I redid my Shamrock,it's rub rail is custom made and is not available any more.
