Repairing odds and ends on a 1978 ski nautique, pretty much done with my punch list, except for the dam window. I've been searching for days on how to remove the darn thing and what to expect when I get it off? The bolts are beyond recognition and all the PB Blaster in Florida will not help. One thread said just snap off the bolts and put new ones in? How, can the glass be removed some how? I tried to remove the rubber gasket around the glass but it's not coming out. I don't want to break anything on this old boat but I'm afraid the windshield going to blow off in my face. I would appreciate it if someone with knowledge of how to proceed would chime in.

Tom,
Since you say you are soaking the bolts with a penetrating oil, I assume you did find them correct? Sometimes they are hard to find since they may be hidden under foam sprayed under the deck. The thread you found about breaking them off is probably your best choice if you can't unfasten them. You could also cut them off with a cut off blade in a Dremel tool. Probably safer if you are worried about breaking something.

Why are you removing the windshield?

BTW, Here's a copy from a previous post: You too have fallen for the BS!!!

You have fallen for the BS advertising hype with the PB! Go for the scientific facts and not what's written on a can. "as advertised on TV" is always a dead on indication that a product is C***. If I remember correctly, Billy Mays at one time was pushing the stuff!

Here's the list of torque requirements copied from another thread:

Penetrating oil ..... Average load

None ...................... 516 pounds

WD-40 ................... 238 pounds

PB Blaster ............... 214 pounds

Liquid Wrench ......... 127 pounds

Kano Kroil .............. 106 pounds

ATF-Acetone mix.......53 pounds

I don't even consider WD40 to be a penetrating oil so that puts PB at the bottom for me. Kroil is a on line order only so when I was taking my 1927 Flexifour apart and trying to break the rusted pistons loose, I did pick up a can of PB. A week went by with no luck and then the Kroil came in. The next day after using some of the Kroil, all four pistons were loose. I ended up using the PB as a honing lubricant!

Go for the 50-50 home brew. It works as many including myself have found out.

Thanks for the reply,
The problem is not getting the old rusted bolts out, there so thin, I could probably snap them off with a pair of pliers. Then what to do? can not find and info on the construction of the window it self. How is the glass held in? How are the bolts mounted on the window frame? Will the glass have to be removed to install new bolts?

Tom,
The bolts have a T head on them that slide into the bottom frame so no removal of glass is needed. Break or cut the bolts and lift the windshield.

Again, I'm wondering why you are removing the windshield?

Oh thank you, you answered my question. I could not find any info on how the bolts were connected to the frame. as to why I want to remove the windshield, it looks like it's ready to come off by it self. I'm sure if it didn't smack me in the face, it would be hard to find at the bottom of Lake Monroe. chuckle.
Thanks again, Tom

Tom,
When you get a chance, how about posting some pictures of your 78. We love them. Also a diary entry is always welcome too.

Posted pictures, waiting for them to clear from the moderator. Windshield is off and found using toilet bolt set from Ace Hardware part #46744. They are a little oval but a grind stone will make short work of it. They are 1/4 by 2 and 1/4 long, so the thread had to be ground to the thickness of your windshield slot near the top only.
