Hello all, been reading a lot on here. You all appear very nice people. :)
Have 1988 Nautique 2001, 351 W. reverse rotation. This boat is in excellent condition (900 hr).
Being on the water and in repair business all my life, I pay close attention to noises.
Saturday, I noticed a noise at idle, but in gear (forward or reverse). Once RPM comes off idle, noise is gone. Once in neutral noise is gone.
For those in the auto and truck field, it sounds just like a bad u-joint. For those not in that field, it sounds almost like a few marbles rolling around in a bowl. Kind of a gargaling sound.
NOTE: I did find the transmission fluid is low. But noise, does not "appear" to be from there. It honestly sounds like it is farther back. It sounds like it's right where the shaft goes through the hull. However, that could just be the noise traveling down the S.S. shaft.
I thought I would ask before I pull the rear floor. I did pull the boat from the water, there is no play in the drive line to the prop.
No, I did not add fluid, YET. Didn't have any Dex on the boat or in my truck. And yes it does appear that someone in the past changed the trans fluid to dex from oil.
Added question: These transmission are to be checked HOT and engine running? Right? I'm getting old and so is my memory.

Damper plate. Probably worse in reverse?

Alan,
When I first saw your post a couple hours ago, I too was going to say damper plate but I'm not too sure. First, what RPM is the engine idling at? When the idle is too low, the planetary gear sets in the trans's have a tendency to rattle.

Peacock - You might want to look at the repair manuals in the reference section.    They cover many years so just check one for BW to get the correct oil level check method.

Well, I have to agree with the "damper" noise. Does fit the bill. But I do like the planetary gears idea also, and with the trans being low on fluid. I think I will try that before pulling the trans.
As for correct way to check trans fluid level. I'm getting two (2) different ways out of the books. This is a BW Velvet 10-17 with a 1:1 ratio. One book says check it hot and right after engine is turned off. While the other says check it when hot and engine running.

Check it hot and while the engine is not running. The fluid from the cooler can flow back to the trans. And give you a high reading cold.   Welco,e to ccfan!

Run it all the way up to the full mark. A little higher won't hurt, low obviously does...

Get us that IN FORWARD GEAR idle rpm number

8122pbrainard was correct. Little oil in Transmission and no more noise. YEA ME. Thanks folks. Now on to a more serious issue.
Yesterday on the water, dumped it to full throttle, like normal it got up and walked on the water. but it stuck there. I had to kill the key.
Opened engine cover and disconnected cable from carb. Throttle cable still stuck in full forward WIDE OPEN. It took a while to get it free, don't rightly know what I did to get it free, but it did come free. It never did it again, But I also didn't go full tilt again.
Also, I am in need of a fuel level sending unit. 1988 Ski Nautique.
