We had an issue with our 1995 Sport Nautique cutting out at high speed. Isolated the issue to the gas tank. Opened up the top of the tank and found some interesting thing in there.. a screw.. the little chain that used to keep the gas cap attached to the boat, and a mistery object. It is in 3 pieces but looks like it was about 4 inches wide. Kinda looks like a rubber diaphram but it's a strange type of rubber. Anyone have any idea what it is and if it is... gasp.. important? Boat is running great now since this object was removed.

Cliff,
CC is notorious for leaving trash in the boats. Many have found very interesting items under or in the bilge foam when removing it. "strange type of rubber"? It may be swollen from sitting in the fuel or they just have strange rubbers down at the factory? Yes, a picture sure would help.

First, and most importantly, I like red too... Not Ms. Saggy Boobs on the right... I'm talking about the one in the middle. :)

I am going to stop by the boat on my way home from work today and if I can find where I put this weird rubbery diaphramy thingy I will take pictures and post them.

Not to change the subject, but wouldn't you know it, after putting up with this issue all of last season, and finally fixing it, the boat ran great for 2 solid hours today... then, 200 feet from the dock the motor died. Started right back up but the starter kept spinning even though the motor was running. Quickly shut the key off... and the haunted thing just kept running.... Starter spinning... motor running.... Quickly opened the cover and pulled off the coil wire.... now the starter was spinning and the motor is spinning but of course isn't "running" because there is no spark..... So, what does one do 200 feet from the dock in this situation? Of course, put the coil wire back on and get yourself home... well, within 100 feet of the dock... Mr. Starter decided it didn't like running for 2 minutes straight.... and gave up.   This is why we keep a paddle on the boat. Yanking the starter tomorrow night to bench test it. Ugg

Cliff,
I have a feeling your starter relay contacts welded themselves together. Weak battery? Bad cables? Bad cable connections? Deep cycle battery?

Have to look at everything I know it's not a deep cycle... just a good ole boy car battery.

200 feet is not that far to row. I would have saved the starter and got out the paddle. Crafty, and ballsy, reconnecting the coil like that though ha

You're not kidding... Asking your wife "Can you plug that wire in" is very crafty.... and I suppose ballsy.

OK, doesn't look like a diaphragm... more like a gasket.. almost like a toilet bowl gasket that goes between the bowl and the tank.

An old sender gasket perhaps? Nonetheless not something that should be floating around in there.

Took the old starter and bench tested it.... Direct to battery on bench the solenoid pops in and out but the starter does not spin.   It's dead.... Got a new starter. Bench tested it first and it spins strong. Put it in the boat, turn the key... and nothing.... Jump the solenoid and the boat starts right up. Any idea where I should start, keeping in mind that the original problem was that while on the water the boat dies, I started it up and the starter kept spinning? I had an extra new resistor that I planned to change out with, but when I opened up the bag I had it in, it is rusted really bad.

Maybe pick up a new resistor? Or start with the starter relay?

P.S. this is a 1995 Sport Nautique, but all of the PROTEC crap has been switched out to a carb, cap, rotor, manual fuel pump, etc.

Starter relay could be bad but keep in mind the key switch start post and neutral safety could also be interrupting your starting circuit.

Your engine won't run at all with a bad ballast resistor. It either works or it won't allow any power to the coil or distributor.

I am a master at wiggling the throttle just right to make sure the neutral safety is not engaged :) I will however bypass the switch and see if it starts up.

I was just looking at and auto parts store online website at starter relays and never realized they can be so bad... Some of the relays have 1 star reviews saying things like.. "Do not buy, cheap product, second time I started my truck the starter stayed engaged"...

Generally I find that buying certain parts for a 351 motor in a "1993 Ford Bronco" replaces very well with the motor I have. The relay with the best reviews which is in stock at my local store is $21.99 and looks exactly the same.   SkiDim sells the "Marine Starter Relay" for $28 + shipping and of course I have to wait. Is there really a difference? From what I've seen with cap differences maybe the terminals are just made of a different ant-spark material?

Ya know, I tend to avoid the word "master" in everyday life, but figured on here nobody would pick up on that. lol. I've been called Norman, been called Master.   Could be worse :)

We launch out of Brookfield's Town Launch just about every weekend. Too cheap to pay the $2,000 + for the 5 month boat slip. I only live about 1/2 mile from the launch so it works out well. On most weekends we usually launch and hunker down by Dike's Point in New Milford. If the kids want to tube we head up your way to pull the tube around Deer Island which IMHO is the best and safest tubing area. Then we anchor down to watch the brave souls jump off Chicken Rock.

Clif,
I always encourage testing before just throwing parts at a problem. Before you run out and get a starter relay (solenoid), how about getting the VOM out and testing why it's not working?? You bench tested the starter and didn't get any rotation so you bought a new one. There's a chance all the old one needed was a commutator clean up and possibly brushes!!!

I hear ya... When it comes to the question on whether or not to replace something the first thing that comes to mind is the horrors of getting stuck of the water. I do tend to over-replace. I'm still gun-shy from the days this boat had the Pro-Tec and I would be getting towed in every other week.

Back in the 70's we kept our century in a slip at a nice boat/yacht club that I want to say was toward the southern end on the Brookfield side, had nice docks, nice grassy area, nice clubhouse, can't remember the name..ring any bells?

The 3 marinas in the area are Brookfield Bay Marina, Candlewood East Marina, and Echo Bay Marina. Based on how you described it you were probably at Candlewood East. Back in the 70's there was a tennis bubble across the street from it. They just remodeled the whole place a couple of years ago and it is quite nice!

Looked for photos of candlewood east, found none. It was a club, not a Marina, but their website says since 1983, so maybe it was just the club before that. Google map looks about right, it was on a point with a cove to the north.

Grew up in Stamford, fond memories of skipping school and going to candlewood. In winter, we'd skip and go to Mohawk Mountain

Not too sure... I was born in Brookfield in 1970, so I can't say I remember exactly what the scene looked like in the 70's. But unless it was in Danbury or New Milford, I think it had to be one of those 3. The only other thing I can think of is a yellow house that is right in the area that is some kind of club. I think it's a Portuguese club, but who knows what it was back then.

And Mohawk Mtn is still there.   I love skiing there because they are somewhat liberal with how they rate their trails. I can ski the blacks and it makes me feel special. If I ski up in Vermont I have to stick to the blues so I don't kill myself.

Know the area well, also my wife grew up in Ridgefield and we lived in Bethel before we moved to ga.

Mohawk is fun but Great Barrington offers ( or at least back then) a lot more (Butternut, Jiminy Peak, Brodie, Catamount) for not much further. Went to Hunter and Stratton a lot, my favorite is Killington.

My sister-in-law lives in Steamboat Springs...Once there I asked about sharpening edges and they were perplexed..."What is this thing you call "ice"??

I'm partial to Smuggler's Notch. I go there every year with a big group of people from Griffin Hospital in Derby. I haven't skied out West yet, but there is probably a 50% chance I will be moving to Denver within the next year, so I may have the chance! I hear it's a lot easier to ski out there.

Believe it or not , I still ski on Olin Mark IV 's with Tyrolia 350 bindings and orange Hanson boots . People talk to me on the lift all the time reminiscing about those skis and the past .
