I'm taking on a lot water thru the prop shaft. It appears the packing gland material has worn out on my '96 SN. I ordered some new material from our host vender. Can anyone give me the quick tutorial on how to perform this repair ? Thank you in advance. Woody |

I only know how to do this on the water. Maybe others can get you dialed in with a dry test but I don't know how that could be done. Make sure you get the right packing material to match your old packing. It comes in both 3/16 and 1/4". Have a couple sharp razor blades on hand to cut the material. You will get one or two good cuts before the blade dulls just enough to leave a ragged cut. You want a sharp cut. I am sure there is a youtube video that shows how to wrap and cut the material and maybe even adjust. I will take a quick look. |

Thanks guys for the advise and help. Now that I see the series of photos and procedures, this will not be as daunting as I had imagined. The new material is scheduled for delivery Friday. I need to pull the boat out of the lake and bring it home for the repairs. Back to you in a few days with an up date. Happy 4th of July to everyone. Woody |

This is a good repair to do on the water so you can get the packing adjusted properly. With all the packing removed you will take on about a pencil thick stream of water while you do the work. I think you would have at least 4 hours work time will you had any significant water on board.. |

It needs to be on the water for final adjustment and you have hours of work time not minutes before you would be testing the flotation of your boat. If that is dangerous I guess I am out on the edge. I had my packing removed completely while on the water and a pencil thick stream of water was coming in. It would take about 10 minutes to fill a gallon container. Certainly not a panic situation, you would have time to work. We just did a 4 day trip and the boat was in the water the entire time. We had maybe one cup full of water in the bilge at the end of the trip so it is worth it to get your packing replaced and properly adjusted. ( and don't sink your boat in the process ) Our packing is 2 years old now with about 40 hours on it and not leaking due to great advice learned on this forum. Mark |
