With a sensible reading of DC now around 14v, if I measure AC should u expect a reading, just I was getting 32AC volts does this mean a faulty diode. Could this be a cause for a hot coil?

Robert,
I would not trust any VOM reading you get when set to read the opposite type of power. Besides, I feel it's meaningless anyway. I suggest running a load test for a good idea of what your alternator is putting out to the boats system.
