My '79 Correct Craft Mustang got increasingly difficult to start, and I took it to the White Lake Marine people in Durham, It would crank great, but never catch. They say they get absolutely nothing out of the distributor.

They're saying that you can't get parts for distributors anymore, and the fix is to retrofit the engine with an electronic ignition.   This seems a little extreme, but they've got a good reputation.

Has anybody else done this or had it done? I'd love to hear from you if so.

White Lake can't find points and condenser? So their quick fix is a EI conversion!!!

I'm guessing there may have been a miscommunication in this conversation?    might be worth checking in again to make sure of what they are telling you. Some mechanics like the EI modules as they are simple, but that doesn't mean that you have to (or want to) replace the points system.    There are varied opinions on which is better, but your mechanic shouldn't tell you they cant get parts that are readily available. If you really did understand correctly, ask them if they need you to buy parts from their competition?

Boyce,
Pull some 2000 grit paper through the points to clean up the contact faces and see what happens. Clarify what WL wants to do: are they suggesting a EI conversion in the existing distributor or a complete electronic distributor?

Maybe dizzy has bad ground, that would fail the spark.

Chuck,
What prompted the conversion?
